  1. Broadband Over Power Lines (BPL) Call for Standards Interest 7June2004 Jim Carlo President, IEEE Standards Association - 2004 j.carlo@ieee.org http://www.standards.ieee.org

  2. Agenda (Introduction) • 10:00AM Introduction and Goals -Carlo • Attendee introductions, including affiliations • Goals and Guidelines of this meeting • IEEE Standards Options • 10:30AM Power Engineering Society Update • Bruce Dietzman, VP, PES Technical Activities • John Newbury, Power Systems Communication Committee )

  3. Agenda (Industry Presentations) • 11:00AM Presentations • Eric W. Gunther, EnerNex Corporation • Bruce Renz, Amperion • Alan Wallbeck, Easyplug, Inc. • Jim Mollenkopf, Current Technologies • Joseph A. Marsilli, Jr., Main.net, PLC Inc. • LUNCH • 1:00PM Presentations • Ed Hare - ARRL • Paul Henry, AT&T Labs – Research • Alex Gelman, Panasonic • Mark Laubach, Broadband Physics, Inc. • Oleg Logvinov, Arkados Inc. and HomePlug Alliance • Victor Dominguez, DS2

  4. Agenda (Summary and Next Steps) • 2:15PM Next Steps -Carlo • Identify groupings of standards needed • Coordination with other standards groups • Projects needed within the IEEE • Identify Working Groups • Leaders • Proposed next Meeting? • July 2004, IEEE, Piscataway, NJ • 3:00PM Adjourn

  5. Why are we here? • What this meeting will do (hopefully) is not to debate the merits or demerits of BPL but rather to see what standards need to be in place to enable BPL technology, protect the public, the workers engaged in BPL, and the systems on which it is to run. • Determine how the IEEE can aid the development of any standards required to ensure workability, compatibility or interchangeability.

  6. Meeting Objectives • Understand what application spaces are envisioned (home, neighborhood wires, long-distance transmission lines) • Review standards that exist already or underway • Identify those additional standards that are needed • Determine the specific problems need to be solved • Identify all regulatory issues, particularly those relating to interference to licensed and unlicensed services that BPL implementations might desire • Identify which companies are interested in driving successful technology • Determine where potential new standards projects should be organized within the IEEE

  7. IEEE Standards Portfolio • Ongoing and Current (890 Standards) • National Electrical Safety Code - NESC • IEEE 802 Ethernet and Wireless • IEEE Software Engineering • IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power Systems (Color Books) • IEEE Power Generation & Transmission • Nuclear Engineering • Transportation Systems • Laptop Battery Standards • Future • Nanotechnology Standards • Broadband Power Line Standards (7June2004)?

  8. IEEE Standards Process • Individual Process • Individuals vote on standards • Process through NesCom,RevCom,SASB • Corporate Process (>50 companies) • Entities (companies) vote on standards • New process designed for industry • Process through NesCom,RevCom,SASB
