  5. #2 REASON To promote scholarship in, and enjoyment and understanding of, mathematics among two-year college students.

  6. #3 REASON There are only 3 two-year colleges in Alabama with Mu Alpha Theta Chapters AND Very few in the U.S.

  7. HOW??????

  8. http://www.mualphatheta.org/Default.aspx • Complete the Petition and have it approved by your college president or the math department chair. • A list of mathematics courses offered by your school including textbooks used, author and date and a brief description of the topics covered in each course must be included with the Petition. • The names of your charter members must also be included, grouped by approximate year of graduation. • Write a paragraph on how you found out about Mu Alpha Theta. • Submit the Petition along with a one-time $15 charter initiation fee and the $10 one-time membership registration fee for each student joining your chapter.

  9. School Chapter Eligibility • In order for a Two-Year College to qualify to form a Mu Alpha Theta Chapter, it must offer: • courses for which high school algebra and geometry are prerequisites • at least three semesters of analytic geometry, differential or integral calculus, statistics or other higher level math courses. • During the two semesters preceding that in which a petition is submitted, the school must have employed at least one teacher: • whose primary teaching field is mathematics • who has completed an undergraduate mathematics major or its equivalent at an accredited college or university. The equivalent of a mathematics major shall be understood to include differential and integral calculus and at the very least, six semester hours of mathematics content courses above that.

  10. Chapter Responsibilities • The Chapter should be regulated by its own by-laws. • The Chapter must regulate its own finances. • The Chapter must notify the National Office whenever the Chapter has a new Sponsor. • The Chapter must have regular meetings throughout the school year and not merely consider itself an Honor Society. • The Chapter should participate actively in the life of the school. • The Chapter should annually elect student officers as defined in their constitution. • Each year the Chapter will induct new members. The initiates must meet the national minimum eligibility requirements and no student can be denied membership on the basis of sex, creed, race, religion, or disability.

  11. Minimum Student Eligibility Requirements • Two-year college students who were members of Mu Alpha Theta in high school are eligible for membership in their college's chapter. • Students are also eligible if they have had at least one course at or above the the MTH 112 level with a 3.0 GPA overall in all two-year college mathematics courses at or above the MTH 112 level.

  12. SUSCC MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS • Transfer membership from high school • Invitation to students who have taken MTH 112 or higher, have an overall GPA of 3.0, and have a MTH GPA of 3.5. • Once a member…always a member!

  13. OFFICERS • President, Vice-president, Secretary, and Treasurer. • Election of officers shall take place during the final regular Spring meeting. • The term of office is one school year.

  14. PRESIDENT • Shall preside at all meetings • Direct the activities of the organization • Sign certificates and cards

  15. VICE-PRESIDENT • Perform the duties of President at times when the President is absent. • Serve as Program Chairman (plans for programs during meetings)

  16. SECRETARY • Take accurate minutes at each meeting, type them and submit to the MAT sponsor. • Read minutes at meetings for approval • Assist with letters of invitation

  17. TREASURER • Write receipts for new members • Maintain a budget report and present the report at each meeting

  18. Goals • Scholarship(s) • Assist with annual high school math tournament • Travel – National Convention, Math/Physics Day at Six Flags, Engineering Day at Auburn… • Community Outreach (School Supplies Project, Toy Drive, Winter Clothing Drive) • Service to College - tutoring
