  1. LIBERAL DEMOCRAT PRIORITIES FOR NOTTINGHAMSHIRE Liberal Democrats in Nottinghamshire have produced 10priorities that they propose to address during the next four years of the administration at Nottinghamshire County Council. The priorities are based on the concerns that members of the public have brought to the attention of the current Liberal Democrat councillors on Nottinghamshire County Council during the present administration. While some of these priorities can be addressed locally, others will require action at parliamentary level, and we will seek help from Liberal Democrats and others at Westminster to bring about the changes that are needed. We will focus on youth and dramatically increase provision for them. Young people in Nottinghamshire have been too low a priority for too long. We will continue to oppose building on our precious Green Belt land, stop the sale of any more school playing fields for development, and retain open spaces for people to enjoy. We will encourage the Government to scrap fees for people in further and higher education. Why should there be fees in England but not in Scotland? We believe our children still need better education. We will reduce class sizes for children under 7 years to 15 places and for those under 11 to 21 places. We will display zero tolerance to those who provide alcohol and drugs to our young people, the cause of much of the crime and antisocial behaviour that we see across the County. We oppose the unfair council tax and will press for this tax to be reformed. It is important that your money is collected fairly and spent wisely and efficiently. We deplore the recent decision to close Care Homes for elderly residents and to increase the cost of Home Helps. We promise that we will get the Council to re-think it’s provision for elderly residents. We will ban Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) from local roads by extending and enforcing weight restrictions. Nottinghamshire’s roads and pavements need £52 million spent on them to make them safe. We will re-direct money to complete the job within the 4 year administration. We will ensure that drains and gullies on our roads are sufficiently maintained to avoid local flooding problems. The current once-a-year maintenance programme is insufficient. We encourage you to contact our Liberal Democrat candidates to discuss these priorities in more detail, and any other concerns that you would like to bring to their attention.
