  1. Welcome to Biology Mr. Massimini & Ms. Doucette

  2. Why Study Biology?? • “Bio” means life • “logy” is the study of • Biology is the study of life!!! • What can be more important?

  3. Why study biology? • To learn about your body. • Supplements • Practical applications • Exercise program • To learn about the past. • Evolution • To try and shape the future.

  4. What you should expect from this class. • To gain a better understanding of life science, especially: • The scientific method • Microscope usage • Chemistry • Ecology • The cell and cellular processes • DNA and GENETICS • Evolution • Kingdoms of life • Human Body systems

  5. Grades !!! • You will have to work hard for your grade (its not going to be easy, but I promise you will learn A LOT!). • The most important thing is to hand in your work on time! There is no substitute for effort!

  6. STANDARDIZED GRADING PROCEDURE HIGH SCHOOL • See the student agenda/handbook • Everything that you do counts

  7. What you can expect from me • A positive attitude (99% of the time, everyone is entitled to a bad day!) • RESPECT!! • Fairness • A facilitator- I won’t always give you the answer but I promise to tell you where to find it (www.classjump.com/gmassimini). • I will prepare you for college and teach you how to think (you might not always like that one)

  8. What I expect from you • A positive attitude! Even if you don’t like the topic or the assignment! • RESPECT!! RESPECT me, RESPECT others, RESPECT the classroom! • No whining! • Try your best! Don’t give up, even if it seems too difficult I expect you to try. • Always hand in your best work- if it has your name on it, it is a reflection on you. • Maturity- towards your work, towards me and towards your classmates. • If there is a problem with anything or anyone (including me) let me know- we can try to resolve it.

The RULES! • Do what you are supposed to do • Respect me, others, and the classroom! • NO food or drink (or tobacco products)! • NO swearing- ever no matter what- even if a chair falls on your foot or something like that. • NO electronic devices (cell phones, I-pods, etc.) are to be used during class • Keep lab tables clear except for necessary materials • Come to class on time!

  10. The RULES! • NO late work! If you are absent you have as many days as you were absent to make it up. (Except for long term assignments- those must be handed in on time- if you are not here- get the assignment here.) • Follow directions! • Only one person talks at a time, unless we are doing group work in which the volume should be kept to a minimum. • Do not get out of your seat unless told to do so- I really hate distractions! • Bring all materials (notebook, textbook, pen and pencil) to class- you will not be permitted to go to your locker. • Bathroom usage is permitted for emergencies only! (and never during lecture or when the door is closed)

  11. Policy On The Leaving The Room • You are not permitted to go to your locker at all. Bring your textbook, notebook and a writing utensil every day. • Bathroom use is limited to emergencies only. If you abuse this privilege, it will be taken away. • Anytime you leave the room, you must sign out (name, date and time) and take the hall pass.

  12. What to bring to class every single day… • A positive attitude • Your textbook • Pen and pencil • Your notebook • A three ring binder- just for biology • Sections: • Notes • Do Now • Labs • Class work/Homework • Test/projects/quizzes • A folder

  13. Miscellaneous Test Taking Procedure College/Standardized Test Rules Absolutely no talking Must stay in seat for entire period Homework passes • Not accepted on all assignments • Put your name, date and the assignment on the pass • If you save them, each pass is worth extra credit.

  14. Assignments • No late work • All assignments must have your name: • no name=no credit • Other than worksheets all assignments must have the following heading in the top right hand corner: • Name • Date • Assignment • Neatness and spelling always count (some exceptions on tests) • Everything must be written in complete sentences • No frayed paper

  15. Textbooks • Please keep your textbooks covered and in the best condition possible. • There will be periodic textbook checks. • If you do not have your text book your class participation grade will drop.

  16. Property Damage • No chewing gum or candy • Laboratory equipment is expensive, please be very careful. If anything is damaged as a result of carelessness, you will be held responsible. • No lab equipment or specimens may leave the biology room. • Do not write on the desk!

  17. Have fun! • I love biology and I hope you feel the same way by the end of the year! • I really want you to enjoy this class so feel free to make suggestions (not in the middle of class though).
