  1. Expectations for Students All students will • Come to class on time with materials, homework, and current work. • Follow classroom routines and rules. • Complete class work and homework on time. • Respect classmates and teacher. • Work to the best of their abilities.

  2. What is a Lexile Measure? A Lexile measure is a valuable piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text. The Lexile measure is shown as a number with an "L" after it . For example, 880L is 880 Lexile.

  3. How are Lexile levels assigned? • A student gets his or her Lexile reader measure from a reading test or program like the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). • A book, article, or an excerpt from a text gets a Lexile text measure based on two strong predictors of how difficult a text is to comprehend: vocabulary and sentence length. • When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience.

  4. Read 180 What is the Read 180 Program? • It’s a comprehensive system of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development proven to raise achievement in reading. Components include • Individual adaptive software for students and data for differentiation for teachers • Engaging multimedia science and social studies content as well as literature • High interest paperback books and audio books • Student dashboards that help students see and track their progress and take ownership of their learning

System 44 What is the System 44 Program? • It’s also a comprehensive system of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. • It’s a foundational reading program for our most challenged readers in grades 3 – 12. • It focuses on intensive phonics and decoding instruction. • It includes the same components as Read 180 (adaptive software, paperback and audio books, student dashboard, and engaging multimedia).

  6. A Typical 88 Minute Period • Copy homework, check and/or collect homework, hear announcements and reminders • Whole Group Instruction • Rotations (software, modeled and independent reading, small group) • Whole Group Wrap-up

Rotations • Small Group-teacher led differentiated instruction • Instructional Software-individualized practice in reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and/or phonics and decoding instruction • Modeled and Independent Reading-fluency and reading comprehension skills development through modeled and independent reading

Small Group Instruction • Differentiated instruction in Small Group • Instructional focus • Emphasis on academic vocabulary and word study • Lessons in grammar, usage, and mechanics • Modeled fluent reading • Reading skills and strategies • Instruction in key writing types • Structured engagement routines • Teacher conferences to check progress and set goals

  11. Instructional Software provides individualized instruction and practice in: • Phonics and decoding • Comprehension • Automatic word recognition • Vocabulary • Fluency • Spelling

  12. Modeled and Independent Reading helps students become better readers with: • Leveled reading practice • Access to grade-level texts • Modeled fluent reading • Think alouds that demonstrate reading skills andself-monitoring strategies • Opportunities to respond to reading in writing

  13. Homework May Include • Reading – 30 minutes + reading log • Writing Work – paragraphs and essays • Test preparation packets

  14. Quarter Grades • Software Work- 25% • Independent Reading Assignments- 30% (Reading Logs, Graphic Organizers, Reading Quizzes) • Whole Group/Small Group- 35% (Wrap-Up Test, rSkills test, Writing, Quizzes) • Homework- 10% (Reading Logs, Vocabulary,)

  15. How to Help Your Child • Help your child find a quiet place to work, and establish a homework routine. • Check your child’s planner regularly. • Remind your child to proofread his or her work. • Plan frequent library outings to select independent reading. • Sign graded work and have child return it to the teacher.
