  1. Homework: “Never tell a child,” said George Macdonald, “you have a soul. Teach him, you are a soul; you have a body.” Explain (D/C grade)/ analyse (C/B grade) or evaluate (B/A grade) this quote.  

  2. Title: Mind vs. Body Starter To know what dualism is and how it relates to immortality. I know the terms ‘dualism’ and ‘materialism’. I can explain these terms and know how they relate to immortality. I can evaluate issues in immortality using ideas like materialism and dualism.

  3. What are we thinking about? Main • This video introduces some of the ideas we’ll be looking at… • Write down what ‘metaphysics’ is… • Make a note of anything you find interesting.

  4. Draw a small table and write down as many words or phrases that describe what these words mean. Main Mind Body

  5. Hands up if you think… Main Mind Body The MIND and the BODY are two different things…? The mind and the body are the same thing. MIND = BODY (or maybe SOUL = BODY)

  6. If you thought the mind and body are the same then you are a… Main Materialist • Materialism believes that the mind and body are the same and that they can’t separated. • Materialists are often scientists

  7. If you thought the mind and body are the different then you are a… Main Dualist • Dualism believes that the mind and body are two separate things and that the mind could live on without the body. • If you believe in ghosts or a soul that lives on after you’ve died then you are a Dualist. I can explain these terms and know how they relate to immortality.

Use pages 90 and 91 in the textbook to find out the following things… • What is dualism and materialism (in your own words). • Why do people believe in dualism/materialism? • What do you think of these two views? Which do you think is right? Main Stretch & Challenge: Can you be a materialist and believe in life after death? I can explain these terms and know how they relate to immortality.
