  10. LOS AZTECA The Aztecs discovered that they could take the thick milky liquid, also called CHICLE, from the sapodilla tree and harden it into GUM. When the Spanish arrived, Aztec prostitutes stood on street corners chewing gum.

  11. LOS MAYA The Mayans invented an advanced an accurate calendar system consisting of 260 days, and later a CALENDAR that followed the solar year of 365 days. Each of the 18 months had a name and symbol, with each month being 20 days long. The Mayans set aside a 5 day period that was unlucky and not given a name.

  12. LOS MAYA The Maya invented a working NUMBER SYSTEM that had a symbol for zero. Numbers were represented using only 3 symbols: a dot, a bar, and a symbol for zero. Large numbers were expressed using place values.

  13. LOS MAYA The Mayans invented a fully functioning system of writing using nearly 800 pictures to represent sounds. They painted the writing on books made from fig tree bark and also on pottery pieces.
