Legislation and teacher education • First legislative act on the occupation title and qualification rights for compulsory school and upper secondary school teachers and for school administrators was passed in Iceland in 1986. • In 1998 some changes, such as the teaching discipline has been written in the teacher’s licence from the Ministry of education, science and culture. Legislation and teacher education • Not thought of as a possible option to do the same thing with compulsory school teachers. • The main rule until legislation act nr. 87/2008 was passed, had been: • minimum requirement for compulsory school teachers, 3 years of study – with official final examination passed. • For upper secondary school teachers, 3years of study in teaching discipline(s) +1year of study in pedagogy and didactics with official final examination. Legislation and teacher education • A new legislation about teacher education from 2008. • The main innovation in the new legislation, is the minimum educational requirement for all teachers (kindergarten till upper sec.school, and for administrators in schools). Since June 2011 a masters degree or another university degree according to the Bologna agreement of 3 years of undergraduate and 2 years of postgraduate study. VÞE Guðjónsdóttir

Legislation and teacher education • Regulation from 2009 states minimum requirements set for teachers in kindergarten, compulsory school and upper secondary school. • The proportion between educational- and professional discipline in order to be entitled to the teaching licence from the ministry of education. • The commencement of the regulation is from July 1st 2011. Compulsory school teachers • 300 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). • Compulsory: min. 120 ECTS in educationaldiscipline, no less than 120 ECTS in the professionaldiscipline. Optional courses no less than 60 units (1 year) for the degree, discipline or education is a personal choice. VÞE Guðjónsdóttir

  7. Upper secondary school teachers • 300 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). • Min of 60 ECTS in educationaldiscipline, no less than 180 ECTS in main teaching subject and thereof should at least 60 ECTS be a part of a Masters Degree. Optional free choice of courses no less than 60 units (1 year) for the degree, discipline or education is a personal choice . VÞE Guðjónsdóttir

Changes in requirements • Changes in requirements for teachers. • Compulsory, from being 2-3 years in a Teachers academy to being 5 years of study. 120edu; 120 discipline(s); 60 choice between edu↔discipline. • Should the study be more oriented towards the teaching discipline instead of didactics oriented?   15. Continuing education for teachers • All teachers have a ceartain amount of hours per year allocated for continuing education. • Different in each school stage. VÞE Guðjónsdóttir
