This Week’s Understanding Goals • Understand how to identify new technologies for learning that can support understanding goals. • Understand how to formulate a clear rationale for implementing technology applications or tools that support one or more elements of the TfU framework. • Understand the difference between using of technology for efficiency or entertainment, vs. using technology to facilitate critical thinking and understanding. • Appreciate how to engage in a learning community with colleagues • Understand how to use the TfU framework and performance criteria to reflect on your work and the work of your colleagues Session 4

Activities for this Class • What did we learn about understanding goals? • Discuss “mindtools” in terms of: • Understanding goals • 21st Century Literacies • Case examples: • Examples of practice • Dynamic Earth: Shama’s choices and rationale • Find a”mindtool” to support UGs and write a rationale • Being an effective learning partner • Our online experiment: your work for the next two weeks Session 4

Ask Yourself: Do My Unit’s UGs..... • Focus on one or more of the dimensions of understanding -- knowledge, forms, purposes and methods we most want students to understand within and across subject matters? • Aim at big ideas -- the most central aspects of generative topic? • Provide coherent connection between activities and overarching goals? • Keep understanding up front by being explicit, publicly shared, and revised collaboratively with learners? • Coordinate your purposes as a teacher with mandated factors such as state or industry standards, curriculum or regulatory requirements, texts, standardized assessments, etc.? Begin to draft a rationale for your choice, using the concepts from readings to Session 4

Effective Learning Partnerships • Use your review of your partner’s design as an opportunity for yourself to perform your understandingof the TfU framework. • The aim is to work with the concepts, raise issues and exchange ideas. • Feedback should be specific. Quote your partner’s work. • Your feedback should be substantive. Being clear and working common concepts is the way to be supportive of your partner’s learning. • Refer to the “ladder of feedback” format for tips. Session 4
