  1. The TRANSTOOLS (3) model Otto Anker Nielsen, oan@transport.dtu.dk

  2. History of European transport network model and data development ETIS TransTools1 TEN-CONNECT Worldnet TENtec TransTools2 TEN-CONNECT2 ? ETIS+ TransTools2½ TransTools3

  3. ETIS+ TRANSTOOLS 3 link • ETIS+ will be the most important data source for TRANS-TOOLS3 • In general very valuable data (hopefully) • But,… modellers have almost infinite desires for data • Therefore also some data work in TRANSTOOLS3

  4. Main model flow in TRANSTOOLS 2

  5. TransTools 3 - Overview • 3 year project, lead by DTU Transport • 2011-2013 (1/3 2014) • 1.95 Million Euro • Improve and upgrade TransTools • Will heavily build upon the new ETIS+ data • Re-estimate the model to 2010 data

  6. TransTools 3 – Model interface • Different purpose specific configurations of the model • Fast for strategic purpose • Mode and sector (passenger/freight) specific configurations • Detailed (slow) version • Two user interfaces • Simpler stand alone interface with predefined configurations • A detailed ArcGISModelbuilder-based for full control and flexibility in model design • =>Three model usage levels • Planners (pre-defined set-up) • Experts (changing configurations, parameters, filter criterias,…) • Researchers (changing utility functions, functional forms, stochastic elements, statistical distributions,…)

  7. TransTools 3 – Main Modelling tasks • Re-estimate passenger demand models • New freight and logistic models • Including containerized transport • Tuned solution algorithms for traffic assignment (network models) • Merged rail networks and new rail assignment models

  8. TransTools 3 – Geography • Geographic scope • Extension of air transport model to include intercontinental flights • Extension of freight models to intercontinental freight • Geographic resolution • More homogeneous zone system • Merge very small zones • Split very large zones • Explicit handling of main terminals • Rail freight terminals • Stations • Harbours • Inland waterway harbours • Airports

  9. Consortium • Technical University of Denmark (DTU) • Institute for Transport Studies, Leeds (ITS) • Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) • Rapidis (RAP) • TetraPlan (TP) • University of Oxford (UOXF-JG) • National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) • John Bates Services (JB) • Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) • Nouveau Espaces de Transport en Europe Application de Recherce (NEST) • ETH Zürich (ETH) • University of Belgrade (UB-FITE) • FOMTERV (FT) • AustriaTech - Federal Agency for Technological Measures Ltd. (AT)

  10. Different partner roles Model development Software Methodological advises Mode specific advices Validation of different European regions

  11. WP Overview

  12. Some general success criteria for TT3 • Shorter run times, and (much) better convergence (less stochasticity) • More thorough validation • Special WP (½ year only for validation) • Internal and external review and validation process • Better documentation • Scientific documentation report • Validation report • User guide
