The base word history comes from the Greek word historia meaning to inquire. Background Information • The British army was referred to as the redcoats because of the color of their uniforms. • At first, France secretly supplied the Continental Army with military supplies. When the American representatives asked France for additional aid, the king refused because he was afraid that the Patriots would lose the battle with England. • After the first major American victory, the king changed his mind and offered the Americans an alliance- both commercial and military. • After fighting of the American Revolution, nearly ten thousand slaves were freed by Virginians for their service in the Continental Army.

  23. Genre: Expository Text Expository text tells something. It contains facts about real people, things or events. The purpose of expository text is to share information with the reader in a straightforward way. The factual information can often be checked by referring to other sources such as science articles, reference books and newspapers.

  24. Comprehension Strategies to Use Making Connections-. Making connections between different texts or between experience and a text helps improve your understanding. We have read about spies in the American Revolution. We know it was dangerous work. In fact, when a spy was caught, the person was sometimes killed. Summarizing- you should be able to give a summary that includes only the important or main ideas. Stop during your reading and summarize what you have read so far. Predicting-Continue to make predictions and check your predictions as you read.

The first selection prepares you for this selection by giving you a basic idea of the people’s histories and their parts in the fighting and forming a new nation.
