  6. Example from Script Once upon a time there was a lovely princess. But she had an enchantment upon her of a fearful sort which could only be broken by love's first kiss. She was locked away in a castle guarded by a terrible fire-breathing dragon. Many brave knights had attempted to free her from this dreadful prison, but none prevailed. She waited in the dragon's keep in the highest room of the tallest tower for her true love and true love's first kiss.

Act I • Event / Ordinary World (Shrek in his element: swamp; receives unwanted guests - fairy tale creatures that Farquaad sent there) • Disturbance / Call to Adventure (Shrek leaves swamp to get fairy tale creatures out) • Reluctant Hero (Shrek must rescue Princess to get swamp back from Farquaad) • Wise Old Man (donkey becomes sidekick; provides exposition) • Protagonist’s Decision / Into the Special World (Shrek accepts mission to rescue Princess) (Chapter 2, Down’s & Wright, p. 33)

Act II • Enemies, Allies, Test (Enemy: Lord Farquaad; Allies: fairytale creatures & donkey; Test: defeats dragon & rescues Princess) • Inmost Cave (Shrek and Princess fall in love on road to Dulac and Lord Farquaad; their inner conflict leads to outer conflict) • Supreme Ordeal (Princess agrees to marry Farquaad; leaves Shrek; goes to Dulac with Farquaad)

Act III • Enlightenment / Seizing Sword (Shrek realizes Princess is an ogre like him) • The Road Back (Shrek comes back to get Princess to marry him) • Climax / Resurrection (Princess at the altar about to marry Farquaad; Shrek comes in to stop wedding; sun sets and Princess’ ogre side is revealed; Farquaad wants to lock her up again) • Catharsis / New Balance (Farquaad defeated by donkey with dragon; dragon eats Farquaad; Shrek and Princess in ogre form get together; marry; ride off into the sunset)
