  1. Digital Data BroadcastThroughWorld Space Satellite System M.K.Bhatnagar

  2. Background • As per WMO mandate HF based regional territorial broadcast since 1963. • Users – IMD field stations, Defence units, Marine industry, neighbouring countries etc • Could not be maintained due to - Obsolete technology world wide - Prohibitive High cost - Non availability of Hardware

  3. Introduction of Digital Data Broadcast • Successful evaluation trial on Naval ships in May 2002. • From 1st July 2003 IMD started a new state of art Meteorological data, and processed products broadcasting service using World Space ‘Asia Star’ Satellite. • Pilot project at ten IMD stations.

  4. Operational Architecture Data Input Interface PC with PC Card, DDA FTP using Internet Data Input Interface Receiver Scheduler/ Formatter Data Storage Kiosk 1. IMD Transmits Data to the WorldSpace Uplink Facility 2. Broadcast Facility Transmits Content as per a Predefined Schedule 3. WorldSpace Satellite - Receive/ Transmit 4. Authorized subscribers receive the content

  5. WorldSpace Satellite Foot Prints World Space Satellite consists of three Geo-stationary satellites, AfriStar, AmeriStar, AsiaStar. Each satellite has 3 beams with each beam covers a service area that includes 5.2 billion people. India is mostly covered by the West beam of Asiastar and partly by the North beam.

  6. Integrated Weather Data Receiving and Analysis System: • Automatic reception of weather data transmitted via WorldSpace Satellite in L band. • Storage and archival of data in a data base • Retrieval and decoding of data . • Raw data visualization – text, charts and images • Satellite Image Manipulation tools • Station data Plotting Surface and Upper air. • Customize chart preparation. • Satellite image manipulation like zooming, Enhancement and Annotation. • Printing of all the products on A3 size paper. IWDRAS

  7. UPS (750VA) Charger BATTERY BANK ( Maint. Free ) CRAMM (Sleep Unit) Work Station POWER DISTRIBUTION Yagi Antenna Laser Printer REGULATED POWER SOURCE ( CVT ) NSPS BLOCK DIAGRAM OF IWDRAS

  8. CRAMM® ( Sleep Unit ) • CRAMM (Continuous Receive And Memory Module ) is an industrial PC which Receives Data automatically during power failure or when Work station is switched off with the help of NSPS (Non Stop Power Supply) . • The World Space receiver unit with DDA. It has 256 MB FLASH RAM.(Expandable upto 1Gb). • It has embedded OS and application Software. • 12 Volts DC supply Design. • It is a low power consuming device (consumes less than 60 Watts during operation)

  9.  It is asystem that integrates fail-proof power source ensuring supply of continuous power to the system. This equipment has been designed specially for remote and isolated locations where power supply may be erratic at times. NSPS® (Non Stop Power Supply)System Power Utilities

  11. Present Broadcast Products • INSAT Images 4/day 800KB • NHAC Charts - Wind/temp 24 Hr F/C 6/day - LAFS Analysis 4/day 1.2 MB - LAFS 24 hr F/C 1/day • GTS Data - Synop, Pilot, Temp, Hourly 3 MB - Warnings, METAR, TAF

  12. Message Decoding The application is designed to receive, decode and archive the WMO data. Once it recognize the file ,it can decode and archive the message to the database.

  13. Message Queries • A query to display a particular message or set of messages can be performed by selecting Datatype, DATE, TIME, Station ID etc. • Station Filter can be used to view the selected station. • A pre formatted report with heading can also be printed for a single or a group of stations.

  14. Surface and Upper-Air Plots • Station Plots • Selected Parameter Plots • Selected Area Plots • Upper-Air Plots

  15. Station Plots

  16. Selected Parameter Plots (Temperature)

  17. Selected Area Plots (East India)

  18. Upper-Air Plots

  19. Wind & Temperature Charts

  20. Rainfall Forecast

  21. Printing • Printing of Data and charts • on A 3 size printer. The annotated or original image can be printed to any printer connected to the windows system.

  22. INSAT image Visualisation

  23. Temperature LUT • User defined LUT (Look Up Table) for grayscale to Temperature conversion. • Animation • Animates a sequence of images for analysis purpose. • Animate series of satellite picture to analyze the cloud system movement in a particular time frame. Adjust speed of animation, play forward or backward animation or display images as a slide show.
