Godly humility Open repentance Personal cleansing Nearness to God Basic demand: Cleanse (katharizo)- to pronounce clean in a levitical sense your hands- as instruments representing our deeds, they need cleansing by removing them from every evil deed that the world’s contaminating pleasures has to offer, Purify (hagnizo)- to make pure ceremonially your hearts- calling for inner purification; the removal of all that disqualifies one for acceptable worship, double minded (dipsuchos) [two souled]- divided in interest (I Pet 2:9) Submit (hupotasso) Resist (anthistemi) Note: There are ten verbs in this section in the aoristtense, and imperative mood, which indicate the need for an urgent break with the old life. These verbs denote decisive military action in our battle with this world system. Verse 7 is a statement of the basic demand, whereas, verses 8-10 are the specific steps to be taken to fulfill this demand. to arrange under, to subordinate to set one's self against Draw near (eggizo) - to bring near, to join one thing to another to God,- used in the Septuagint of the priests in the tabernacle, who were qualified to approach God with their sacrifices (Rom 12:1,2) Humble (tapeinoo)- to make low, bring low yourselves- because of the passive voice, this phrase literally means “allow yourself to be humbled”; this is not a forced humility, but a voluntary self-abasement in the sight- in full view of the Lord, and he shall lift you up- {He shall exalt you} (|hupsôsei humas|). Future active indicative of |hupsoô| (Col.3:4) Be miserable (talaiporeo)- to feel afflicted and miserable inner repentance, with the idea of denying pleasures for a season, and mourn (pentheo)- lament, and weep (klaio- bewail)- outward repentance resulting from inward repentance: let your laughter be turned (metastrepho)- to turn around, turn around to mourning, and your joy to gloom- true repentance involves both inward and outward repentance. (Matt. 5:4; II Cor. 7:10)
