Village Development Committee Survey • Our NGO partner (Namsaling Community Development Center) has expressed interest in projects focusing on the following areas based on the VDC surveys and remaining items in the plan of action: • Quality of drinking water • Water source protection • Irrigation canals • Hydro canal • Energy efficient households (electricity, cook stoves, biogas) • Waste water treatment/drainage • The community appraisal will focus on these problems and potential solutions. Household Energy Availability • Energy Sources • Micro-hydro power plants are fairly plentiful source of electricity • NCDC support for 50 kW community-owned plant • 3.2MW private plant recently constructed • Provide electricity for rice and flour mills • Community installed peltric sets (water turbine/generators) for electricity production • Solar photovoltaic arrays for single home scale electricity production • EWB working in Ilam district to install biogas digesters • Fuel for cooking stoves and home heating Energy Minimal energy availability for Wards 6, 7, and 8 Mabu, Nepal “High Goals, Low Expectations”

Sustainable Community Development 2009/2010 Mabu, Nepal Team • Previous SCD team identified high incidence of waterborne disease as most critical problem for Mabu. • Latrine construction selected as the best solution for this problem • Collaborated with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Haifa-Technion Chapter and Biogas Sector Partnership – Nepal (BSP-Nepal) to construct biogas digesting latrines • Provide energy source for community in addition to addressing problem of waterborne disease • Behavior change communication program developed to supplement latrine construction and help ensure sustainability of solution • Traveled to Mabu to complete actual construction of latrines Previous Work Mabu, Nepal “High Goals, Low Expectations”

Mabu’s Available Resources • People’s Mobilization: Existing examples of projects built with the people of Mabu’s active participation and unity (a road, VDC building, resource center). • Economic Sources: Local taxes, land leasing, government grants (Note: Community relies on government grants to fill the balance of its yearly needs). • Local Social Organizations and Government Agencies: Health, Savings, Community Forest, Drinking Water and School Management organizations and agencies.
