  1. Chapter 3

  2. The Relationship • Jack- Wielder of the Knife and male dominance- Father figure among the boys. The male is encouraged to go out and seek resources • Ralph- Wielder of the Conch and feminine community- Mother figure among the boys The female figured is encouraged to stay at home, prepare the resources, and protect the young. • Simon- the good child, innocent- happily follows orders, flees the sight of his arguing parents to a dark hiding spot

  3. Jack hunts as Simon and Ralph build shelters • Everyone else has run off to play • Ralph notices the futility of meetings- all talk and no action • Jack madness for “meat” and killing are becoming worse • The “littluns” are afraid of the beast- • Simon makes the comment “as if it wasn’t a good island.”- a dystopia vs. utopia

  4. Jack shows signs of fear from the Beast- a slide toward irrational thinking • He claims he feels if he is being hunted in the forest- fear and survival • Ralph’s main goal is to be rescued; Jack’s goal is to kill. • The difference between liking your role and disliking it

  5. Simon hands fruit to the littluns- provider • Simon finds a special hiding place- beautiful description- similar to heaven

  6. Simon’s Hideaway • Heavenly retreat for Simon the Innocent

  7. Assertion • What distinguishes a rational man from a savage? • Remember the most important question; Why is this important? • Define your terms…What does it mean to be rational? What does a rational man look like? Why? • Do not list anything as evidence that both a savage and rational man can do unless you distinguish why the context they are using it in is unique. Ex. Communication
