(HINT: Look around the room!) • Approximately how many copper atoms are there in a penny? Take a guess! • Reflect on your quiz performance yesterday. How do you think you did?   3. Size of an Atom • How many copper atoms make up a penny? ANSWER: approximately 2.4 x 1022 atoms. Radii of most atoms: 5x10-11m to 2x10-10m

  15. Periodic Notation • Elements are different because they contain different numbers of protons • Atomic number: number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that element • Atomic Mass: Average mass of all isotopes on the planet.

  17. The number of protons DEFINES THE ELEMENT The number of electrons and neutrons can change, but carbon will ALWAYS have 6 protons. If Carbon had 7 protons, what would it become? If it had 5 protons, what would it become?

  19. Mass Number The Periodic Table does NOT tell us something called the MASS NUMBER. Remember, the atomic mass is the average of masses all together. MASS NUMBER = # Protons + # Neutrons  This will tell us the mass of the atom!! **In order to know this number, it must be given OR number of neutrons must be given!!* YOU CANNOT PULL THIS FROM THE PToE!

  20. How do we calculate subatomic particles? Atomic number = # of protons = # of electrons (in a neutral atom) If MASS NUMBER = # Protons + # Neutrons, then how do we calculate # neutrons if only given Mass number and atomic number? # Neutrons = Mass Number – Atomic Number

  27. Notes! Isotope • Isotopes: atoms that have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. • Ex: carbon-12 and carbon-14 • The number next to the element represents the mass number.

Pass-The-Atom • You and a partner will work together to answer information about atoms that will be passed around to you. • You will have exactly 1 minute per atom to work on it, and then I will say “pass” and you will pass the atom to a different pair. You will do this until you’ve had all 17 atoms! • The number of the atom is written in red on the plate.
