  2. Geography • Americans were fighting at home on familiar ground. The British were far from home in unknown territory.

  3. Foreign Help • Spanish and French soldiers fought with the Americans. France loaned money and their navy. Polish officers provided training. Casmir Pulaski was one of these Polish officers.

  4. Patriotism • Patriots refused to give up. They loved their country and would fight to the death to defend it.

  5. Leaders • George Washington’s leadership and military skills were so good that he was respected by Americans and British alike.

  6. War Strategy • The Continental Army eventually began using guerilla warfare to win battles.
