  1. December 4 Preview: Which of the following two options is the best way to run a classroom? Teachers should run their classes by rules and harshly punish rule-breakers? Or Teachers should lead by being an example of morals, honesty, manners, and integrity?

  2. December 4 Preview: 3. Confucius believed that people in China during his lifetime were rude and dishonest. Here is one of the things he said about leadership: “Lead the people by rules and punishments and they will be deceitful (sneaky) and have no sense of shame. Lead them by means of a moral example…and they will have shame and higher standards.” Do you agree with this. Why or why not? Please read page 169 of the handout.

  3. Comp Book title: “Confucianism and its influence” Confucius was a teacher in ancient Chinese history. He taught that people needed to return to ethics or moral values. His writings are called The Analects and his ideas are known as Confucianism. Read Confucius’ sayings. What would Confucius say to each of the following people?

  4. Confucius SAY: To a someone who wants to make the country a better place C) The strength of a nation derives (develops) from the integrity of the home. A. To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order; we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right

  5. Confucius SAY: To a disrespectful person G) Without feelings of respect, what is there to distinguish men from beasts?

  6. Confucius SAY: C) The strength of a nation derives (develops) from the integrity of the home. To someone who leads others. B) It is not possible for one to teach others who cannot teach his own family. N) “Raise up the straight and set them above the crooked and the people will obey. Raise up the crooked and set them above the straight and the people will not obey.” E) Faced with what is right, to leave it undone shows a lack of courage. L) The Master said: When one rules by means of virtue (goodness) it is like the North Star – it dwells in its place and the other stars pay reverence (respect) to it.

  7. What would Confucius SAY: Virtue is never alone; it always has neighbors. To someone looking to make friends? He who lies down with dogs gets up with fleas. Take loyalty and trustworthiness as the pivot and have no friends who are not like yourself in this. With men of middle level or higher, one may discuss the highest; with men below the middle rank, one may not discuss the highest.

Read the article about Confucianism’s role in society • Confucius taught the importance of family and family roles in society. • Fathers were to lead the family by being a good moral example • Mothers were to serve their husband and family by caring for household duties • Moral leadership, not laws, brought order to China. • These ideas are known as Confucianism.
