  1. Solar Opportunities for Egypt El Nasr Pilot Steam Plant Amr A. Mohsen

  2. World Solar Resources

  3. Egypt Solar Resources • Egypt is blessed with abundant solar energy. 2,500KWH/m2/yror 1.2MBOE/km2/yr • Egypt has an opportunity to lead in selected solar technologies. We need this for; • National development (e.g. remote areas) • Job creation • National security • Exports

  4. Opportunities for Egypt • Domestic Water Heating • Industrial (Water & Steam) Process Heating • Desalination • Cooling • Air Conditioning • Power Generation

  5. Industrial Process Heat Market in Egypt - 1995 data (ref. 1998 NREA/Fichtner study). - 1995 fuel consumption is equiv. to 136,000 barrels of fuel/day that is conservatively valued at over $1 billion a year (excld. Transport). - Study predicts a 32% increase in 2003 and 73% by2011.

  6. Commercial Potential for Solar Power Generation Upper Egypt : Lowest Solar Power Cost in MENA (Middle East & North Africa) Source : 1998 Study by DLR Germany

  7. El Nasr Project • Turnkey contract awarded through a competitive international tender. • Design & construction of a 1.9 t/hr process steam plant by means of parabolic trough solar concentrators. • Financed by an African Development Bank grant. • Managed by NREA (New & Renewable Energy Authority) & the Ministry of Electricity

  8. Parabolic Troughs in Egypt …. ….Back to Roots !! 1913 in Maadi

  9. Project Milestones • Sep 99 : Bids submitted • May 00 : Award to Lotus-IST • Oct 00 : Contract signed • Aug 01 : Site handed over • July 03 : Construction completed • Sep 03 : Plant handover

  10. Project Overview • Site area : 8,000 m2 • Collector number/area : 144 / 1,900 m2 • Absorber : Glazed 2“ black nickel pipe • Steam : 1.3 t/hr saturated at 8 bar • Local content : 70+% • Innovations : Swivel joints, state-of-the-art tracking & process controls
