  1. ALIEN INVADERS

  2. Native Species • An organism which is indigenous to a given region or ecosystem.

  3. Introduced Species • Known as an exotic species • An organism that is not indigenous to a given location but instead, has been accidentally or deliberately introduced to a new location by humans or by natural means.

  4. How did they get here? • Ballast Water • Canals (man made waterways) • Recreational Boaters/Ships • Accidentally Imported in boxes, on plants, etc • Pet Release • Aquaculture • Intentional Introductions

  5. Ballast Water Introductions

  6. Canals

  7. Importation through the Mail

  8. Pet Release

  9. asian carp attack video

  10. Intentional Introductions • Introduced by scientist to decrease the population of native and non-native species. • Introduced for sport • Introduced for aesthetic value

  11. Other Invasive Species

  12. Positive Effects of Introduced Species

  13. Point Source Pollution • Identifiable inputs of waste that are discharged via pipes or drains primarily (but not exclusively) from industrial facilities and municipal treatments plants into rivers, lakes, and ocean.

  14. Non-Point Source Pollution • pollution that occurs when rainfall, snowmelt, or irrigation runs over land or through the ground, picks up pollutants, and deposits them into rivers, lakes, and coastal waters or introduces them into ground water.

  15. Types of Pollution • Air • Water • Land • Noise • Thermal • Radioactive

  16. Air Pollution • excess emission of gases/vapors into atmosphere • saturation of chemical compounds/particulates • rate of dissipation < (smaller than) rate of absorption through various cycles (i.e. carbon and nitrogen cycle) • emergence of new chemical reactions of reactive and non-biodegradable compounds. • Global warming, acid rain, smog, ozone depletion are some effects of air pollution.

  17. Water Pollution • petroleum products • synthetic agricultural chemicals • heavy metals • hazardous wastes • excess organic matter • sediment • infectious organisms • air pollution • thermal pollution • soil pollution

  18. Land Pollution • Deposition of solid waste • Accumulation of non-biodegradable materials • Toxification of chemicals into poisons • Alteration of soil chemical composition (imbalance of chemical equilibrium to soil medium)

  19. Noise Pollution • road traffic noise • air traffic • rail traffic • neighborhood and domestic noise • incompatible land use • industrial noises

  20. Thermal Pollution • Raw materials for productivity (organic and inorganic products) • Undergo different chemical reactions with several process • Excess heat energy is produced as a waste product • Heat is released through into atmosphere (vapor) andriverine system (liquid). • Increase of temperature of environmental system

  21. Radioactive Pollution • nuclear power plants • nuclear weapon • transportation • disposal of nuclear waste • uranium mining
