  1. Properties of sound November 29, 2010

  2. Speed of Sound • Speed depends on the medium • Speed changes when the medium changes • Speed of sound depends on temperature • The cooler the medium, the slower the speed of sound

  3. Pitch • How high or low you perceive a sound to be is the pitch • The pitch of a sound is determined by the frequency of the sound wave • What is frequency? • Can we hear all frequencies? • NO!!!!

  4. What Do We Hear? • The average human ear can detect sounds that have frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. • Anything lower than 20 Hz is described as infrasonic • Anything higher than 20,000 Hz is described as ultrasonic • Ultrasonic waves are used to clean jewelry and to remove ice from metal

  5. Loudness of Sound • Loudness is how loud or soft a sound is perceived to be • Loudness depends on amplitude • What is amplitude? • The larger the amplitude, the louder the sound • The SI unit for loudness is the decibel (dB)
