Uses of Tener. Capítulo 6. tener. In a negative sentence, we generally don’t use the indefinite article after the verb tener unless there is an adjective. For example . . . No tenemos jardín. We don’t have a garden. Do not use the word for “a” unless there is also an adjective.

  2. tener • In a negative sentence, we generally don’t use the indefinite article after the verb tener unless there is an adjective.

  3. For example . . . • No tenemos jardín. • We don’t have a garden. • Do not use the word for “a” unless there is also an adjective.

  4. For example . . . • No tengo un perro negro. • I don’t have a black dog. • We used un in this sentence because negro is an adjective.

  5. Practice He doesn’t have a shoe. We have a cat and a dog. He doesn’t have a red shoe. We don’t have a big cat.

  6. Practice Tenemos un gato y un perro. No tiene zapato. No tiene un zapato rojo. No tenemos un gato grande.

  8. tener • Tener + ganas de + infinitve • To feel like doing something • Tengo ganas de bailar. • I feel like dancing.

  9. tener • Tener + # + años • Tengo 15 años. • I am 15 years old.

  10. Practice Tengo que comprar un vestido. I feel like sunbathing. She is 14 years old. Tienen ganas de mirar la tele.

  11. Practice I have to buy a dress. Tengo ganas de tomar el sol. Ella tiene 14 años. They feel like watching TV.
