Information/Key Findings • 26 different heavy metal elements found in “clean” shop towels sampled across North America • 100% of shop towels tested contained toxic heavy metals • More heavy metals found in the laundered shop towels tested than in the 2003 study • Workers reported higher shop towel usage – average 12/day • Increased towel use = increased exposure to heavy metals

Gradient Study Findings Based on Gradient’s research, here’s what the 12-towel user would be predicted to ingest on a daily basis over the regulatory exposure limits. • 10x beryllium • 43x cadmium • 17x cobalt • 9x copper • 3,600x lead Exposure compared to US EPA Oral RfD, ATSDR Oral MRL and CalEPA MADL and NSRL toxicity criteria for non-cancer and cancer endpoints.
