  1. IE 361 Out-of-Class Project: Optimize combination of groundwater wells and evaluate treatment performance of Ames Water Treatment Plant John Beatty Adam Geissler Scott Johnson Cheng Li Date: 4/25/2014

  2. Problem Statement Reference: From Denver Colorado water treatment plant website: http://www.denverwater.org/WaterQuality/TreatmentProcess/

  3. Project Goal and Objectives Goal: To minimize variability of the raw water coming into the plant and evaluate stability of treatment process. Objective: • To calibrate the laboratory devices (linear regression), • To evaluate the R&R of testing process (Gauge R&R), • To evaluate the stability of water treatment process (Control Chart) • To determine optimal well combinations (linear programming)

  4. Calibration results of the lab testing devices

  5. A Excel-based Two-Way-ANOVA Gauge R&R Program

  6. Example outputs of the Excel Gauge R&R Program

  7. Control charts for evaluating stability of the water treatment process

  8. Control charts for evaluating stability of the water treatment process Continued

  9. Excel-based linear optimization program for selecting groundwater wells

  10. Lingo program for selecting groundwater wells

  11. Results Comparison between Lingo and Excel-based Program Lingo Program results Excel-based Program results

  12. Conclusions and Recommendations • Laboratory testing devices need to be calibrated periodically, • Gauge R&R program can be used to evaluate the laboratory testing process, • Water treatment process is stable • The Excel program can generate optimal combinations of groundwater wells.
