Senior Newsletters • Primary way of communicating information about scholarships, visitation days at colleges, College and Career Fairs, special programs, visits from college and military representatives, senior news • Available in hard copy and on the school website • Are usually published about once a month • Usually given out in English or History classes

  8. Choices: Life After High School • Post-Secondary Education (4-year College, 2-year College, Technical or Professional School) • Military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard) • Workforce

Get a Jump Start on College… • Accelerated High School Student Program – through Snead State Community College – these do not show on your high school transcript, only count as college credit • Dual Enrollment – through Snead State Community College – these count as both high school and college credit. • 2 College courses = 1 high school credit • Example: Eng 101 & Eng 102 = 12th English credit

Dual Enrollment: • Dual Enrollment: • Contract with SSCC • Completed admissions (Online admissions application, Signature/Residency form, valid ID) • Submit a copy of the signed dual enrollment form • Submit copy of their in progress high school transcript. • Minimum GPA – 3.0 • Must have an ACT 20 in math and/or a 21 in English to qualify for math or English classes

Junior Calendar: Fall of your Junior year: • Step up your involvement in club/activities • Begin keeping track of your community service • Keep a list of your accomplishments and achievements for your resume. • Keep focused on your grades. JUNIOR YEAR GRADES MATTER!!! • Continue researching potential colleges and careers • Begin mapping out dates for your ACT tests

Junior Calendar Winter of your Junior Year: • Begin to prepare for the ACT exam given in April • Narrow choices of colleges down to 5-7 • Build a folder on each possible college choice • Visit college campus with parents • Create a scholarship profile on fastweb and finaid. • STAY FOCUSED ON GRADES!!

Junior Year Calendar Spring of your Junior Year • Register for Senior classes • Research scholarship opportunities • Take AP Exams • Narrow colleges choices down to 3-5. • Plan out your ACT testing calendar • Practice, Practice, Practice ACT questions • Be ready to apply to at least 3 colleges in the fall of your senior year

  15. Fall of Senior Year • Should have top 3 choices • Plan College Visits to these colleges • Apply to your top 3 choices • Apply for scholarships at these colleges • Request official transcripts be sent

  16. College Application Process • Most of the time, you will apply online. • Make sure you fill out all forms. Sometimes, scholarship applications and activities forms are separate. Always fill out scholarship applications! • Departmental Scholarships may require separate application and/or try-out • Have ACT or SAT scores sent directly from your ACT Student account • Have transcript sent – See Mrs. Thornton • Ask for Letters of Recommendation (if needed).

  17. DEADLINES!!! • You must meet deadlines! Apply early. • If a scholarship application has a December 1 deadline, you must have all your materials processed by that date.

  20. College and Career Fair • When: January 15, 2015 • Where: Marshall County Technical School • Our Time: 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

  22. Spring of Senior Year • Apply for local scholarships • Feb. 1st – Mar. 1st is the deadline for most local community colleges for scholarships • Turn in copies of scholarship letters to Mrs. Thornton • You must have AP Scores sent by College Board to the college you plan to attend.

  23. ACT DEADLINES!!! • October is the last ACT Test Date accepted for most Dec. 1 scholarship deadlines. Make sure you have your scores sent directly to the appropriate school. • Sometimes, 1 or 2 points makes the difference in the level of scholarship money. Study before you take the test! For example, at AU, 28 ACT + 3.5 GPA = $3,000 yr. but 30 ACT + 3.5 GPA = Full Tuition.

  29. Financial Aid • Scholarships – Academic, Athletic, Leadership, Specialty (Band, Theatre) • Grants – Money based on need which does not have to be repaid (FAFSA) • Loans – Money which must be repaid • Work Study – Students work on the college campus and are paid

  30. Calculating the Cost of Attendance: • Tuition • Fees • Books • Room/Board • Meal Ticket • Sorority/Fraternity dues • General living expenses: gas, entertainment, etc…

  31. Sample - UNA Estimated Cost of Attendance PER SEMESTER: Tuition (15 hrs): $3660.00 Fees (15 hrs): $874.00 Meal Ticket: $ 1413.00 Dorm: $ 1459.50 Books (estimate): $500.00 GRAND TOTAL: $7906.00

  32. Financial Aid Awards: ESTIMATE: Full Pell Grant (2014): $5645.00 $2822.50 per semester Academic Scholarship: $7,000.00 $3500.00 per semester Grand Total: $6322.50 Difference: $7906-$6322 = $1584
