### Car ModelsSold in US 2003-2004

Stine & Foster 4 - 53

Motivation
• You are looking for patterns to help determine what might affect mileage for different models of automobiles sold in the US
• You collect data for 233 models sold during 2003 and 2004
• You want to identify any cars with superior mileage and then determine their characteristics
Method
• Use summary statistics (moment and order) to describe the distribution of horsepower
• Use a histogram to describe the shape of the distribution
• Use a boxplot to identify possible negative and positive outliers
Mechanics
• Calculate the numerical statistics
• Draw a histogram
• Create a boxplot
• Bring your findings back into Excel and Powerpoint
Horsepower for Cars

Summary Statistics

Message
• Some cars have significantly more horsepower than others
• The distribution of horsepower is positively skewed
• The mean and the standard deviation could be strong influenced by the extremely large horsepower cars
• The narrowness of the interquartile range suggests that many of the cars have very similar horsepower
