  1. Butler Tech leadership in providing increased or improved Special Education Services in Butler County As reported July, 2005 By Harold Niehaus

  2. Special Education Review • Performed during the 2003-04 school year by Mrs. Sally Williamson, Butler Tech Consultant (provided to the Butler Tech Board; Fall 2004) • Review of: • D. Russel Lee CTC offerings • Associate school special education services • Visitations to special education programs that are leading in the use of “best practices” outside of Butler County • Review of public and private agencies that provide services to the special needs population

Creation of a Task Force • Performed during the 2004-05 school year • Met in November, January, and May • Brought together associate school representatives, agencies, and service providers • Initiated sub-committees and work in the following areas: • Parent survey committee • Educator survey committee • Continuum of services development committee • Funding sources committee

  4. Steering Committee Lead Work • Monthly steering committee meetings set the agenda and work for the sub-committees, resulting in the following:

Parent Survey Committee • A parent survey to determine the needs and desire of educational services for their student • Over 125 respondents • Information included their expectations for the student after high school, desired job training/work programs, and job related skills perceived as needed.

Educator Survey Committee • An educator survey to determine the current Associate school services as follows: • Methods of special education delivery • Specific programs provided in each district • Knowledge of existing agencies and services • Greatest needs of the existing special education student population • Needs in professional development

Continuum of Services Development Committee • This committee worked to provide an overview of current educational options for the Special Needs population. • Reviewed existing continuums • Called upon associate schools and existing education, juvenile, and mental health providers • Created a continuum chart and reviewed with the Task Force

  8. Funding Sources Committee • Began meeting after other sub-committees • Reviewed data provided and current funding streams used and available • Convened numerous secondary and adult education and special needs population service providers like: • MRDD • BVR • Goodwill

  9. Additional Steering Committee Work • Further review of outstanding and nationally recognized programs that could be implemented in Butler County • Focusing of the Task Force work for 2005-06 • Based on data collected and input from desires and needs expressed by the Task Force. • Included current “best practices” in the field • Possible partnerships and grant $ opportunities with Project Search

  10. Work for 2005-06 • Continue to inform and meet with the Task Force • Work with Project Search through grant $ to create a Pilot program or programs in Butler County
