  2. Coffee in the DSIP • Coffee was ranked 2nd among the 17 strategic commodities in the DSIP • Targets: • Plant 20 million seedlings per year • Export 4.5 million bags of coffee by 2015

  3. Selection criteria for strategic commodities • Returns in investment (profitability) • Prioritized with agric production zone • Number of households involved (food security, income, acceptability) • Contribution to exports • Poverty effect • Multiplier effect • Size effect (growth and poverty reduction) • Potential (future) impact of selected commodities

  4. Coffee Challenges in the DSIP • Supplying sufficient coffee wilt resistant seedlings to farmers • Limited knowledge on coffee by extension service providers • Formation of coffee farmer groups or associations

Coffee Strategies in the DSIP • Research to produce more strains of coffee wilt resistant varieties • Mass multiplication of resistant varieties for farmers to plant • Extension services to farmers to improve productivity and quality • Support formation of farmer organizations • Quality assurance of harvested and processed coffee
