2. Adjectives • Definition Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence. • The Articles — a, an, and the — are adjectives.

3. AdjectiveForms • The Adjective forms are known as the positive, the comparative, and the superlative.

4. AdjectivesforComparison • The comparative and Superlative are used to compare, also known as Degree of Comparisons. • We use the comparative for comparing two things That is a good book. This is a better book and • the superlative for comparing three or more things. Which of the three is the best book? He made a bad choice. She made a worse choice. They made the worst choice of all.

5. AdjectivesforComparison • The comparative forms of most adjectives, however, are formed by adding the suffixes-er and -est, or by placing the words more and most in front of the positive form. • There are 5 rules to form these adjectives comparative forms.

6. RULES FOR FORMING COMPARATIVES • 1. One syllable words form the comparative by adding -erand -est: PositiveComparativeSuperlative bravest smallest darkest Brave Small Dark braver Smaller darker

Exceptionsto Rule No. 2 • With some two-syllable words, the writer must consider custom and ease of pronunciation. • Case No. 1 two syllable words that have the accent on the first syllable form the comparative by adding -er and -est. Ex. common, cruel, pleasant, quiet.BUT tasteless, more tasteless, most tasteless. • Case No. 2 Some two-syllable words that have the accent on the second syllable form the comparative by adding -er and -est: Example: polite, profound,BUT: bizarre, more bizarre, most bizarre.
