  3. Chilliwack, British Columbia • Located 100 km east of Vancouver • One of the most rapidly growing communities in BC • Population: approximately 88, 000 • Population expected to exceed 100,000 within the next 5 years

  4. A Growing City in the Country Chilliwack is: • surrounded by agricultural areas, plentiful green spaces, walking trails, and outdoor recreation activities • ideally situated with most resources or activities within an hour’s drive.

  8. South Sardis The majority of students within Mt. Slesse Middle School’s catchment area are located in the neighbourhood of South Sardis. Most housing in the area are single dwelling residences or townhome complexes.

  10. Within a Stone’s Throw Mount Slesse Middle School is within walking distance of the Rotary Trail along the Vedder River, Twin Rinks Arena, and the Cheam Leisure Center. In addition, the Chilliwack Education Park is located nearby. Plans for the Education park include: • A new campus for UFV; • New facilities for the Justice Institute; • A new Chinese Cultural University, to be developed by UFV and two affiliated post-secondary institutions based in Beijing; • A new research and development centre, operated by UFV, to focus on gaining value from B.C. wood products; and, • Space for research or education related industries.

  12. Student Backgrounds • 14% of Mt. Slesse students are Aboriginal • 1.6% speak English as a second language • 5.4% have recognized learning disabilities • 0.8% have recognized behaviour disabilities • 0.6% are considered ‘academically gifted’

  13. Classroom Details • Average class-size for Grade 8 & 9 = 25.5 • Students are divided into ‘core sections’ and attend all academic classes with that grouping • There are seven sections of Grade 8 students • There are six sections of Grade 9 students

School Library Resource Center Physical Access The library operates on a semi-flexible schedule where teachers may book their classes into the library and/or collaborate with the teacher-librarian as needed. The library is closed and unavailable to students for three blocks of the eight block timetable due to the teacher-librarian’s classroom assignment.

School Library Resource Center Resources • A wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books for circulation • Variety of reference materials that remain within the SLRC • Eight computer stations with access to the Internet • Knowledgeable teacher-librarian - available to assist with learning activities and collaborate with classroom teachers

  16. Science 9 I have chosen the Science 9 curriculum as my focus for these assignments. There are 175 students enrolled in Science 9 and three teachers of this course. All three teachers have greater than ten years of experience. Only one of the three has assigned resource based learning projects in the last two school years.
