  2. Welcome to a New Year, a New Campaign and a New Challenge Dear Brown Dog Member, First of all may I wish you all a Happy and Healthy 2012 and I trust you all had a great Christmas. Also can I thank everyone who attended our very first brown dog Christmas Party and for the effort (and cost) that you invested in dressing up in such fantastic medieval costumes which (along with the authentic barn) created a wonderful old world atmosphere and kick-started the first of many fund raising events. So here we are, a new year, a new campaign and some exciting new challenges to look forward to – the detail of which is included in the web site. It’s great that despite the busy nature of Christmas that so many of you have already found the time to register and pay for our challenges in June. Now that Christmas is behind you I’m hoping that many more of you will now register and pay as soon as possible to guarantee your place as numbers really are limited this year. As ever we have two challenges for you to chose from on 23rd June and whether you chose the more demanding High Peak challenge or the Low Peak Challenge it really doesn’t matter to us as our challenge is to raise £30,000. Also remember that you don’t have to raise funds just by doing the challenges and getting sponsorship, there are many other options available that we cover later in this news-hound. On a personal note congratulations to Martin Green for winning a LTSB Award, to Matt Crack and Tash Baylis who recently announced their engagement and to Richard & Kathryn Parkes who are expecting their first baby in February. Finally I hope you find this months Newshound interesting and if you have any questions relative to this years challenge or fund raising do not hesitate to contact either myself or one of the Trustees. Take Care Mark Storer – Founder Member

  3. 2011 Campaign - Members raised more money than pledged! • At the Dogs Dinner in June we announced that we had raised £31,000 purely from sponsorship, donations • And gift aid. • We are delighted to announce that thanks to your fantastic effort we have actually raised £33, 750 • With other monies already held we have been able to send a cheque to Poole Hospital for £38,600 towards the cost of the Biopsy Imaging Camera System and associated equipment • We have received a letter of thanks from the hospital and confirmation that the scanner has been ordered • and is expected in the very near future. The hospital stressed what a difference this will make to so many women and how lives will be saved through early detection. • A formal presentation will be made to the hospital once the scanner arrives and any of you are welcome to join this. • Well done to everyone who took part in both challenges and THANK YOU SO MUCH • "Also, our friends who took part from Lloyds TSB have managed to gain a further £3,500 in match-giving which has been distributed to Bowel Cancer UK, Cancer Research, MacMillan Cancer and Marie Curie - a huge thanks to all involved and to LTSB." My donate was used by many of you for the first time in 2011 which helped by making collection easier and automating the collection of Gift aid.

  4. 2012 Campaign This year we are returning to the Leicester Hospital Trust to raise money towards the My Space Appeal. The My Space Appeal is all about creating a new Children and Young People’s Cancer Unit at Leicester. Various charities are raising money for specific items connected with the new ward. Brown Dog wants to raise at least £30,000 to fund the creation of a dedicated care room. This room would provide a private facility for really poorly patients who need specific care. One of the things we want to provide is a specialised ventilation system to further help these patients. By funding this room (or more than one room if we raise more funds) we will really make a difference to so many young people who are fighting cancer today. Once we have raised the money and put our own plaque on the door “the brown dog” room we can all be proud of our achievement. Please help us by raising as much money as you can in the next 6 months. Remember you don’t have to raise money just by doing the challenge, there are many other ways (discussed later in this Newshound) that you can help.

  5. 2012 Challenges – Registration & Payment This year we will be organising two challenges on Saturday 23rd June in the Peak District. 8. Park house Hotel in L Medieval Christmas Party – 3rd December The first ever brown dog Christmas Party was held at the Donnington Park house Hotel in Leicestershire. Every single guest turned up in medieval fancy dress which created a wonderful atmosphere. A raffle was held and £207 was raised to kick-start the 2012 fund-raising campaign.

Could you sell wrist bands for us to raise money for our 2012 Appeal? Get in touch with one of the Trustees now................ Thank you

  11. Fund Raising – Through a Regular Donation We appreciate that it’s hard going back to the same people every year asking them to Sponsor you to complete a challenge – so this year you could try a different approach! If you could persuade 5 of your family, friends or colleagues at work to give up £5 per month you would raise £300 £3 per month £5 per month £10 per month 1 person £36 £60 £120 3 people £108 £180 £360 5 people £180 £300 £600 10 people £360 £600 £1200 20 people £760 £1200 £2400 • All you need to do is: • Pursued your friends and family that brown dog is a great charity • - Talk to them and explain the things we do • - Show them the ‘brown dog information pack’ • - Get them to look at our web site – www.cancerbrowndog.co.uk • Ask them if they would be prepared to make a donation each month • Tell them how to set it up – even help them do it • Remind them how by doing this they will make a real difference to • someone who has cancer – thank them big time! • Alternatively people could: • make a one off donation • Payroll Giving (automatic from salary) • Legacy (leave a gift after • death)

  13. Fund Raising for the Challenge Using MY DONATE Last year many of you used My Donate for the first time and said how easy it was to use. Basically using the link below you go to My Donate and set up your own fund-raising page and your own unique web link that you can give to people. http://www.btplc.com/mydonate/index.aspx Using the link your friends and family can transfer funds directly from their own account into the brown dog account and Gift Aid is automatically added. Here is Marks page last year as an example – you can create your own. https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/markstorer1 There is a small fee taken by the Bank for the transaction (approx. 2p) The advantage of using My Donate is that it’s easy to use, funds are collected and are in the bank immediately (no asking for money later) and we ensure that Gift Aid is collected for all money donated (whereas at the moments it’s only about 40% we collect). Please try and use mydonate – any of the trustees will help you if you have difficulty If you just can’t use MY DONATE You will find a sponsorship form on the web site. Always try and encourage donations and take the money now so you don’t have to collect it later. If people sponsor you always ensure you take their full name and full postal address and write clearly on the form. Once you have collected all the money remember to send your sponsor forms to Ian Alexander who will then claim Gift Aid for brown dog.

  14. Early Fund Raising Achievement Congratulations and Thank You to Jack Wardle and his employer E-On Recently Brown Dog member Jack Wardle wrote to his employers to ask if there was anything they can do to support our 2012 campaign. You can imagine Jack’s delight when they confirmed they would donate £2000 as part of their Community Scheme. Clearly Jack needs to be congratulated for taking the initiative and achieving this fantastic fund-raising height. Also our sincere thanks to e-On for making such a generous offer A thought for all our members..... Maybe you could write to your employee or to local companies where you live, you never know what they may come up with!!! They may put a smile on your face like e-On did for Jack
