  1. Acts Chapter 2 Questions & Answers

  2. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 1. Name the three great Jewish feasts and what time of year each is held. • Passover, held for seven days in the Spring around April. • Feast of First Fruits, (Pentecost, feast of weeks) held in Summer around June. • Tabernacles, (Ingathering) held in the Fall around October.

  3. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 2. What was the significance behind waving the sheaf of the first fruits?(See Lev. 23:15-17) • This speaks of Christ who was raised from the dead. Fifty days after the two wave-loaves, Jew and Gentile saints resurrected and described as first fruits. (1Cor.15:23, Lev.23:17). • 1CO 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. • This give insight to the season of the resurrection which also might give insight to the season of Jesus’ return.

  4. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 3. Give three reasons why the holy spirit gifts were given out at the time of the apostles. • To authenticate the apostles • To give time for the New Testament to be written. • As a helper to the new ecclesia.

  5. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 4. Why does the word "holy" sometime proceed "spirit" and sometimes not? • The word "holy" often appears before "spirit"to show something separate and special is involved in the use of God's power. For example when the Bible was being written, scripture says the holy spirit was involved. • 2PE 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

  6. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 5. In Acts 2:6, it says "every man heard them speak in his own language". Does this mean that when the apostle Peter spoke, all who heard him, heard him in their native language? (Support your answer.) • This gift probably wasn't a super language but the ability to speak a foreign language without having to learn it. • Acts 2:8 says every man heard in their own tongue. The Greek word for tongue is "dialektos" from which we obtain our English word dialect. • If the miracle was in the hearing then this gift of the holy spirit would be with the hearer, but the gift of tongues or dialects was given to the speaker and not the hearer.

  7. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 6. Why did Peter quote Joel 2:28-32.5? • Joel2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy …, 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: • This power and the way it was being manifested was so unusual, it was being ridiculed. Peter therefore quoted Joel to show this gift had been promised in the prophets thus giving it legitimacy. • Peter being guided by the holy spirit didn’t quote the last part of Joel 2:32 since the full fulfilment would be after Armageddon and didn’t apply to the 1st century.

  8. How do we know Joel 2 has partial and full fulfillment? ANSWER: Peter quoted Joel giving only the partial fulfillment.

  9. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 7. (T/F) Joel 2:28 is a prophecy showing the holy spirit gifts would be given out in the first century as well as upon Christ return. • True for Joel 2:28-32.5 is a prophecy having both a partial and full fulfilment however the last part of Joel 2:32 only applies to the full fulfilment from the “great and terrible day” (v.31). This comes on Babylon the Great after the “northern army” (Gog) is removed and the holy spirit gifts are in evidence (vs.28,29).

  10. Acts 2 Questions & Answers • Why didn't Peter quote the last part of Joel 2:32? • Joel2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. • Because the last part of Joel 2:32,("... for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.)didn't apply to the partial fulfilment in A.D. 70 for there was no deliverance in Jerusalem. This is a good example of how careful we must be in interpreting Scripture.

  11. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 9. How does the context in Joel 2:28-32 help us to correctly interpret Acts 2:21? • Acts2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. • Knowing that Joel has both a partial and full fulfilment, we can correctly interpret what is meant in Acts 2:21 when it says: "... that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved”. • In the partial fulfilment Jerusalem would be destroyed therefore calling on the Lord is interpreted as being saved eternally. • In the full fulfilment application when Jesus will be king in Jerusalem those who call on the name of God will be delivered from the great and dreadful day of the Lord and go into the millennial age as mortals. • Joel2:31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

  12. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 10 (T/F) The immediate context of Acts 2:21 was about being saved from the judgments coming upon Israel in AD 70. • Acts2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. • ANSWER: True

  13. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 11. In Acts 2:23 it says that it was determined before it happened that Jesus would be slain. Does this not show that Jesus didn't have free will and no matter what he did, he could change his destiny? • God gives man free will and if we choose to jump off the bridge we can, however God in His foreknowledge knows whether we will jump or not. Jesus could have been like Josiah and tempted God, but he put this type of temptation behind him by quotingDeu.6:16, "Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God ...". • Josiah knowing this prophecy may have thought that he could go against Pharoah-Nechoh and not be killed in battle, 2Kings 23:29. • 2KI 22:20 Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; • Josiah should have understood that Judah would be at peace and the Egyptian army hadn’t come against Judah. • 2 Kings23:29 In his days Pharaohnechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates: and king Josiah went against him; and he slew him at Megiddo, when he had seen him.

  14. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 12. Why was it not possible for the grave to hold Jesus? • Because Jesus was able to condemn sin, always being able to counter and overcome his sin nature. God being righteous was able to raise him for Jesus having been tried in all points, never sinned. He therefore “condemned”(doomed) the operative principle, namely: "SIN = DEATH. • ROM 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sinin the flesh: • The wonder was Jesus was able to accomplish this being made in all points like us, Heb.4:15.

  15. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 13. Re: Acts 2:25 How did David see Jesus at his right hand when Jesus wasn't yet born? • Acts2:25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: • ANSWER: From Psalm 16 we see David as a prophet who was given a vision of the future when Jesus would be at God's right hand. • Psalm16:8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. • David saw this and took courage knowing Christ's role as the Messiah and savior of mankind from eternal death.

  16. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 14.How can scripture say Jesus didn't see corruption when the brain cells start to corrupt within about four minutes from death? • ACT 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. • ANSWER: This could have been a miracle however scripture goes out of its way to say that Jesus was laid in a new tomb where no one else had been laid, giving another way of answering that Jesus didn't see corruption. • JOH 19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre,wherein was never man yet laid.

  17. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 15. What key point is the Apostle Peter making in Acts 2:29 and why is this so useful in showing man doesn't go to heaven at death. • Acts2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. • ANSWER: Peter draws a contrast between a DEAD David whose sepulchre still could be seen with a LIVE Jesus who was at God's right hand acting as mediator. • (Key point)If David's soul was alive in heaven this contrast wouldn't have been made nor would the resurrection from the dead be that important. This shows going to heaven at death is a false doctrine.

  18. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 16. T/F David was a prophet? • ANSWER: True, v.30. • Acts2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;

  19. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 17. Why is Acts 2:31 so helpful in showing hell is the grave? • Acts2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. • Because it is a quote of Psalm 16:10 where the Hebrew word "sheol" can be equated to the Greek word "hades". This means we are not dependant on Greek words which are steeped with Greek mythology for its meaning. Rather we can see how "sheol" is used in the Old Testament. When this is done, it is easy to show that "sheol" means grave. • Psalm16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell<sheol>; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. • EZE 32:27 And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell<sheol> with their weapons of war: …

  20. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 18. Who was David's Lord in Acts 2:34? • Acts2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, • ANSWER: Christ

  21. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 19. What was the counsel of the Apostle Peter to those who had crucified Jesus. • ANSWER: Repent and be baptized • Acts2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

  22. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 20. What is meant by the NAME of Jesus in Acts 2:38 and why is it important when we pray to God to do so through Jesus' NAME? • ANSWER: Christ's name embodies what Jesus accomplished in his life, death and resurrection. • We also use “through” because Jesus is our mediator (1 Tim.2:5) • 1 Timothy2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

  23. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 21. T/F In Acts 2:39, those who were "afar off" were the Gentiles. • Acts2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. • ANSWER: True as seen in Eph. 2:13 -- “far off “ both literally and spiritually. • Eph.2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

  24. Acts 2 Questions & Answers • What is meant by the "breaking of bread" in Acts 2:42? • Acts2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. • ANSWER: The context shows the memorial service is meant because it mentions: doctrine, fellowship, and prayers (plural) which support more than just eating a meal.

  25. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 23. What is meant by having all things in common? • ANSWER: This was a form of socialism where lands were sold and the money given to the common cause.

  26. Acts 2 Questions & Answers 24. Who is responsible in adding members to the ecclesia? • ANSWER: God does the calling and Christ's brethren do the planting and watering as seen in 1CO 3:6 - "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.“ • Unfortunately many are called but few are chosen, Mt. 20:16. The context is laborers who agree to work and the time in the vineyard doesn’t matter. They all are paid the same. • Matthew20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
