Europhotometeo’2009 European Meteorological Society Photography Competition announced by the European Meteorological Society (EMS). 429 photos related to meteorology taken in 2009 were admitted to the competition. The Organizing Committee preselected 86 of them  these are shown in this pps. 30 members of the jury, consisting of representatives on the EMS Council and presidents of EMS Member Societies, each chose their top ten pictures. 2. European Meteorological Society "Dawning Mist" EPM’09 winner Photo, 104 points Early Morning mist rises up over the lakes as the early morning sun lights the mountains in the background. Upper Lakes, Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland2009-09-14 Anthony Byrne, Ireland

  3. "Supercell II" European Meteorological Society EPM’09 2nd ranked Photo, 96 points The thunderstorm left this beautiful rainbow descending on the region, on our way just before dusk, and it kept its maximum vertical structure. I was unable to leave that place until the last sunbeams had disappeared. Ribafrecha, La Rioja, Spain2009-07-01 Antonio Carramiñana Calzada, Spain

  4. "The End" European Meteorological Society EPM 3rd ranked Photo, 94 points During a heavy thunderstorm on the Peninsula of Parata, contrary to the appearance, this picture was taken in the night, with the lighthouse to prove that fact. A strong lightning struck behind me and permitted to reveal this incredible cloud structure and to show how powerful this place is. The Genoan tower seems to be a impregnable castle taken out of a tale. Near Ajaccio, Corsica, France2009-23-06 Tony Le Bastard, France

  5. European Meteorological Society EPM 3rd ranked Photo, 94 points "Prahova Double Rainbow" After the rain, a beautiful rainbow appeared on a clean sky. It was so beautiful but lasted only for ten minutes. Lucky me, I had the tripod ready and I took for shots to create this image, four because I wanted to get a panorama view to include all the rainbow and I also used the bracketing mode. Near Ploieşti, Prahova County, Romania2009-03-07 Ioan Rizea, Romania

  6. European Meteorological Society EPM’09 5th ranked Photo 93 points "Altocumulus Lenticularis at Sunrise" The picture was taken at sunrise towards the east. But at that time the sun was still hidden by the 2600 metre a.s.l. jagged summit called the Ferrouillet. So only the altocumulus lenticularis cloud was shining on and could be seen showing through near Grenoble. Belledonne Massif, French Alps, France2009-02-16 Daniel Goetz, France

  7. European Meteorological Society "Skyscraper" EPM’09 6th ranked Photo, 66 points At dusk on a warm and sunny day in late autumn, a mist from the Rhône Valley casts its veil over the city. Seen from the Massif Du Pilat, only a few high-rise buildings emerge amidst this stratus coloured by the lights of the city. This moving bank of mist would disappear during the night as the wind gently blew. Near Saint-Etienne, Loire, Rhône-Alpes, France2009-10-30 Pierric Thouilleux, France

Leglerhütte, Glarner Alpen, Switzerland2009-10-06 Markus Aebischer, Switzerland

  20. European Meteorological Society 26 points "þingvallavatn in Autumn" The year marked a challenge for this Nordic country, not only politically and economically, but also meteorologically speaking. After a long winter the island responded with a very dry and above-average hot summer, followed by a unusually calm autumn and warm winter. þingvallavatn, with a surface area of 84 km², is the largest lake in Iceland and plays a key role in Icelandic history since the Alþingi, the world’s oldest parlament, was founded at its north shore in the year 930. The mountainous surroundings with large cracks and faults are of volcanic origin and developed by interactions on the border between the Eurasian and North-American tectonic plates. Clear skies indicate northerly atmospheric flow, delivering clear visibility and temperatures below 0ºC. South side of þingvallavatn Lake, Iceland2009-01-11 @ 15:54 Maik Brötzmann, Germany

  24. European Meteorological Society 23 points "Halo Phenomenon in Strasbourg" The colourful arcs of that image are produced by rather large and well orientated ice crystals in cirrus clouds. All these halos are usually formed by hexagonal plates and columns, which are sufficient to draw a plethora of ice-halos into the sky, whenever the crystals are of sufficient quality. Reflection and refraction draw these arcs here. Strasbourg, Alsace, France2009-03-18 Herfried Eisler, Austria

  25. European Meteorological Society 23 points "Snow Line" Freezing fog and overnight -9ºC frost coated our clothesline, transforming it into a thing of beauty. Ballinlough, Westport, County Mayo, Ireland2009-12-24 Lyle McElderry, Ireland

This shot was taken during a fine spell of weather at the beginning of the month. Sutton, Dublin, Ireland2009-06-03 Gerry Dunne, Ireland

  30. European Meteorological Society "Cévennes Lightning" 17 points The extension of a cold front triggered a weak thunderstorm at dawn over Les Puechs in the foothills of the Cévennes mountains, the southeastern edge of the Massif Central. 35. European Meteorological Society 13 points "Sunset on the Jungfraujoch" The picture was taken from the High Altitude Research Station at this 3,580 metre a.s.l. mountain. After a hard day of work, repairing some aerosol measurement instruments a wonderful sunset delighted our evening, we could see with our own eyes that the aerosols scatter blue light more, therefore the direct light during sunsets becomes red. Jungfraujoch, Bernese Alps, Switzerland2009-05-05 20:28 Zsófia Jurányi, Hungary

  36. European Meteorological Society 12 points "Inside an Occluded Front" Starting the descent on our flight towards the Dutch city of Amsterdam in the early morning, at an altitude of 30,000 feet or 9,100 metres these cirrus bands and the towering cumulus below are forecasting the arrival of a warm occluded front.Lille, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France2009-03-14 Jordi Martín García, Spain

We can imagine the extreme conditions faced by these pines during tough days of cold and humid wind. The snow mounts close to two or three meters, and the pine branches are covered with frost. The second plan shows the Corbières region with lower mountains just above the fog, the third plan a small part of the Pyrenees. Near Pradelles Cabardès, Aude, France2009-02-15 Antoine Benne, France
