  4. WHY THIS KIND OF PROGRAM ? Starting points • Prejudices are learned patterns of thinking and behaving and as such can be relearned • Each person has a role and responsibility in breaking or perpetuating the chains of oppression

  5. PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM • INCREASE KNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTANDING AND SENSITIVITY OF MECHANISMS WHICH PERPETUATE AND MAINTAIN SYSTEMS OF DOMINATION • COMMIT TO CAPACITY BUILDING FOR PERSONAL, PROFESSIONAL AND INSTITUTIONAL TRANSFORMATION

  6. AREAS OF UNDERSTANDING NAMING BUILDING ALLIES VOICING

  7. NAMING • PUTTING LANGUAGE TO OUR EXPERIENCES • IDENTIFYING REAL PROBLEMS (PREJUDICES, FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION/OPPRESSION) THROUGH NAMING REALITY IN CLEAR AND CONCRETE WAYS

  8. VOICING • Is the act of speaking out on issues, ideas and feelings • opens the doors for listening, dialogue and the development of critical consciousness

  9. BUILDING ALLIES • Moves us from reflection to supportive and concrete personal and collective action • Requires the understanding of dominant and subordinate groups positions of power in an effort to overcome alienation and injustice

CONCEPTUALIZATION • PSYCHOLOGICAL LEVEL – developing empathy for self and others, a positive self image, self respect and a healthy respect of others • EDUCATIONAL LEVEL – information concerning otherness and mechanisms that create and perpetuate prejudice, discrimination and oppression • CONCRETE ACTION LEVEL – empowering individuals and groups to take responsible action

  11. STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM • Two 3 day training modules that are scaffolded and interconnected • Module One – Building Critical Consciousness • Module Two – From Reflection to Action • One 3 day training of trainers module

  12. PROCESS OF THE TRAINING Combines theories and activities with personal experiences intended to stimulate intellectual and emotional responses, leading to a commitment to action
