  1. Department of Management Science Sub-Campus Osmanabad Presentation on :-Simple Network Management Protocol Guided By :- Mr.Varunraj Kalse Presented By :- Mr.Amol B. Thakre M.C.A :- II Sem :- III

  2. Content • Introduction • SNMP Basic Components • SNMP Basic Commands • SNMP Management Information Base (MIB) • Agent and Manager • Object Identifier • SNMP Management • SNMP Interoperability

  3. Introduction • The Simple Network Management Protocol is an application layer protocol that facilitate the exchange of management information between devices. • It is a part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. • SNMP enables network administrator Manage network performance, find and solve network problem, and plan for network growth. • There are several version available of SNMP i.e. SNMP1, SNMP2,SNMP3.

  4. SNMP Basic Components • An SNMP manage network consist of three component i.e Manage devices, agents, and network mngt system. A manage device is a network node that contain an SNMP agent. 2) Manage devices collect and store mgt information and make this information available to NMS’s using SNMP. 3) Managed devices, sometimes called network element can be routers and access server, bridges, hubs computer host or printers. 4) An Agents is a network mangt software module that resides in a managed deevice. And also translate that information to SNMP. 5) An NMS execute application that monitor and control managed devices.one or more NMS must exits on any manage network.

  6. SNMP Basic Command • Managed devices are monitored and control using four snmp command. Read b) Write c) Trap Traversal Operation The read command is used by an NMS to monitor managed devices. TheNMS examines different variables that are maintained by managed devices b) The write command is used by an NMS to control managed device. TheNMS changes the values of variables stored within managed devices c) The trap command is used managed device to send updates to the system manager.

  7. d) Traversal Operation :- let the system manager retrive information found in variable table. SNMP Management Information Base(MIB) A management information base (MIB) is a collection of information that is organized hierarchically MIB’s are access using SNMP. Manage object is dentified by object identifier. MIB Hirarchy. Root org dod iso dod iso org internet directory mgnt Security directory mgnt security

  8. Top level MIB object belongs to different organization. • And the lower level object are allocated by the associated organization. • The manage object name is uniquely identified by its object name. • e.g :- iso There are two types of managed object :- Scalar Tabular Scalar :- Scalar object define a single object instance. Tabular :- Tabular object define a multiple related object. Which grounded in MIB’s table.

  9. Agent and Manager • SNMP Agent :- • process running on each managed node collecting information about the device it is running on. • There are two basic design of agents • Extensible Agent • Monolithic Agent • Extensible Agent:- Open modular design allow for adaptation to new mgnt data operation requirement. • Monolithic Agent:- It is not extensible. It gives best performance on specific hardware platform and o.s. • Manager :- • process running on a management workstation that requests information about devices on the network.

  10. Object Identifire • Object identifire are used to identify SNMP object. • Object identifire are strucrure as apattern of numbers seperated by dots. • Also indicate specific values that can be read by remote host. • for e.g the object identifire at which MIB gear as located as .iso, .org, .dod SNMP is distributed management protocol. A system can operate in a NMS or agent. Also it can perform function on both. When system operate on both. The another NMS might require the query managed devices. The summery of report locally store as mgntinformatiion SNMP Management

  11. SNMP Mangement consist of :- SNMP Security SNMP Interoperability SNMP Security :- it consist of 1)Modification of Information 2)Message Sequence 3)Timing Modification 4)Disclosure 1) Modification of Information :- Modification of information involves an unauthorized entity attempting to alter a message generated by an authorized entity. 2) Message Sequence and Timing Modification :- Message sequence and timing modifications occur when an unauthorized entity reorders, delays, or copies and later replays a message generated by an authorized entity. 3) Disclosure :- Disclosure results when an unauthorized entity extracts values stored in managed objects.

  12. B.SNMP Interoperability :- • SNMPv2 is compatible with SNMPv1 in two areas i.e message formats and protocol operation. • SNMPv2 message used different header and protocol data unit (PDU) format than SNMPv1 message. • SNMPv2 also uses two protocol operation that are not specified in SNMPv1. • Note :- • Languages are used in SNMP • SMI (Structure of Management Information) • ASN1(Abstract Syntax Notation one) • BER(Basic Encoding Rules)
