  1. The DeBakey HSHP Science Department Our Goal: To increase the percentage of students earning college credit by passing the Advanced Placement (AP) Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics exams.

  2. The DeBakey HSHP Science Department Our Mission: To provide laboratory-based courses that provide hands-on science experiences by promoting critical thinking and problem solving skills. Our lab facilities are separate from the science classrooms.

  3. Keys to achieve our goals • We have implemented vertical and horizontal collaboration amongst all science teachers. • We participate in continuous professional development training. • We conduct tutorials for all students in all science subjects four days a week.

  10. 4-year Science Curriculum Sequence Required Courses • 9th grade: IPC Magnet / PreAP and Biology Magnet / PreAP • 10th grade: Chemistry Magnet / PreAP • 11th grade: Physics Magnet / PreAP • 12th grade: AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and/or AP Physics Elective • 11th grade: AP Biology, AP Chemistry, or AP Environmental Science • 12th grade: Scientific Research and Design

  12. Two teams of four students used the principles of buoyancy and density to construct a boat using just cardboard and duct tape. Physics: Cardboard Boat Regatta

  13. Boat Regatta at UH • Students participated in a boat regatta at the University of Houston • Finished 5th out of 20+ teams (most of the boats sank ) • Possible class project for Pre-AP students in the spring

  14. Robotics Iron Vipers Includes: Teamwork Design, Build,& Program discussions, computer design (autocad) and programming, seeing other teams, mentors, etc. Meets 2-3 times per week avg 10 students /day out of 30 5 tournaments Oct.–Jan. Need $$$ Parts (pneumatics and metal) Registration fees Establish second team

  20. The DeBakey HSHP Science Department has demonstrated excellence in preparing students for AP Sciences. Our students graduate with a strong foundation for college.
