  1. Babar: Stato e Prospettive Giancarlo Piredda INFN Sezione di Roma La Sapienza CSN1-Napoli-19 Settembre 2005

  2. PEP-II Safety Planning and Restart Cronistoria degli eventi (J.Seeman IFC di Luglio) • October 11, 2004 Electrical accident at SLAC. All running of accelerators stopped. • Safety training with new procedures October 2004 – March 2005. • Type A Investigation October-December, 2004. • Corrective Action team: December 2004-January 2005. • Restart Validation Review: February 2005. • “Pre-restart” conditions completed March 2005. • Linac and PEP-II operations start up April 15, 2005. • Power outage: May 18-20. Beams returned May 25. • FFTB beam line revalidated June 2, 2005. • ESA beam line revalidation is in final stages. (July 2005)

  3. Babar Run5

  4. PEP-II • Peak Luminosity • Run 5 record is 8.5*10**33 (was 9.2 in May 2004) • Rather smooth running (when trees don’t fall) • Carnet des doleances • RF relialibility • Klystrons (no spare!) • Beam Position Monitors heating problem LER bunch lenght affected Plan for repair in Fall 2006 • October short down • PPS certification (Linac and Pep-II) • Replacement of Q5L vacuum chamber • DCH readout board replacement

  5. PEP-II Run Schedule 2005-08 • Collide steadily from April 2005 through July 2006 with a “one month break” in October 2005. (Present: October 3 through November 4, 2005) • 2006 Down is August through November for BaBar, PEP-II, and LCLS upgrade work. • Three month down in Summer-Fall 2007 for LCLS work. • Collide through September 2008.

  6. Overall Parameters and Goals Twice design Over three times design Over five times design!

  7. Expected PEP-II Delivered Integrated Luminosity (July 2005)

  8. Daily Luminosity

  10. DCH electronics upgrade • Motivation: • Reduce deadtime due to serialization and shipping of data from DIOM to ROM • Upgrade in two steps: • Phase 1 (summer 2004) • Ship only 1/2 waveform information (3216 bytes) from frontends • No change observed with data • Phase 2 (Oct 2005) • Larger FPGA for feature extraction before transmission  hardware change • New boards in production

  11. LST sextants LSTs are fully operational wire holders RPC sextants Efficiency curves from Run 5 data After one year operation only 5/1550 wires have problems

  12. Humid gas since June 8 Humid IFR Gas Apr. 24 July 7 Layer 13 Layer 13 Humid gas since Feb. 18 Layer 16 Layer 16 Humid gas since May 5

  13. Efficiency per Day (%) Dopo cinque anni di Run ancora in ottima Salute!

  14. Come stiamo con la produzione di Fisica? • A few comments from the Summer Conferences 2005 • Even without new data (<17 fb-1 from Run 5 by July 1): 65conference papers to LP05! More new results for EPS. • New channels added to high profile results • KsKsKs( with one Ks->pi0pi0) - r0r0 • Much progress of Vub and inclusive b -> sg spectrum • Discovery of a new & unusual heavy state at 4.260 GeV/c2 in ISR events • Expectations for Summer 2006 • Summer 2006 data samples will be comparable with Belle, given the long continuous run & luminosity improvements planned • BABAR results for Penguin modes should be better than Belle (comparable if Belle analysis improved)

  15. Physics goals & expectations • Goal for 2005-2006: double current data set • Delay in Run 5 can be overcome by summer 2006 with extended running period, with substantial reduction in errors on CP violation asymmetries in rare decay modes • Error on average of Penguin modes should reach 0.06 • Goal for 2007-2008: double again to ~1 ab-1 • Individual Penguin modes with errors in range 0.06-0.12 • Suite of fundamental Standard Model measurements with substantially improved levels of precision Sensitivity to New Physics through rare decays, CP violation and large data sample

  16. Normalized performance ratio Typically better errors for BABAR despite larger Belle dataset Competition: Better physics performance (e.g S the sine amplitude) Bottom line: BABAR is getting the equivalent of a factor of 2 in luminosity through better analysis/detector performance

  17. Projections of data sample growth Run 5: Apr 05-Jul 06 1 month PPS down 4 month LST down Double data by summer 2006 Double again by Sep 2008

  18. Projectons Summer 2008 f0KS KSp0 jKS h’KS KKKS Luminosity expectations: 2004=240 fb-1 2008=1.1 ab-1 K*g Golden modes reach 5 sigma level 5s discovery region if non-SM physics is 0.30 effect 2004 2008 Projections are statistical errors only; but systematic errors at few percent level

  19. Projected Uncertainties of UT Parameters(two B-factories with comparable lumi ) -LHCb will need to run three years (design lumi) to achieve the 2008 precision -No future experiment will be able to measure Vub with comparable precision -For several NP models the deviations of the CP violation in b-> s penguin modes can be 20%. Babar Physics Reach Assessment

  20. PEP-II/BABAR run plan for 2005-2008 • Run 5: Apr 2005 to July 31, 2006 • Down for month of October for PPS certification, Linac & PEP-II safety issues, DCH readout phase 2, LST preparations • Run through holidays in Dec 2005 • LST installation down: Aug 1 to Nov 30, 2006 • Installation of remaining 4 barrel sextants of the IFR • Installation of PEP-II vacuum upgrades and rf-station • LCLS construction and installation • Run 6: Dec 1, 2006 to Aug 31, 2007 • Down for Sep-Nov 2007 for LCLS construction & installation • Run through holidays in Dec 2006 • Run 7: Dec 1, 2007 to Sep 30, 2008 • Run through holidays in Dec 2007

  21. Final version of June 8 Timescale P5 ChargeParticle Physics Project Prioritization Panel Current planning calls for PEP-II to be operated until the end of FY2008 at the latest, and the Tevatron collider to be operated until the end of FY2009. What factors or considerations might lead to stopping B Factory operations one year, or two years earlier than planned? When would we be in a position to make such a determination and what information would be needed? • Membership finalized • Inaugural meeting late August • Visit to Fermilab in September 8-9 • Visit to SLAC in early October 6-7 • Report by end of year Next IFC meeting January 20-21

Future PEP-II Improvement Activities • New transverse digital feedback processors (Summer 2005) • New RF comb filters (Fall 2005) • New klystron linearizer (Spring 2006) • Install LER-5 RF station (Fall 2006) • Install HER-10 RF station (Fall 2006) • Upgrade several high-power IR vacuum chambers (Q2, Q4, Q5, Q2 bellows, LER abort spoiler, straight section bellows …) (Fall 2006) • HER lattice upgrade for lower momentum compaction and shorter bunches (Fall 2006) • Fix LER BPM heating issue (Fall 2006 if not before).

  26. IFR upgrade with LSTs Bottom & top sextants installed summer 2004 Remaining sextants delayed until summer 2006

  27. The missing channels • At one year from the installation 5 wires over 1552 are in a hospital PS at lower voltage. • Few other HV channel are connected in the hospital PS (no loss of efficiency). • The problem of the hospitalized channels can be in the HV distribution (cables, capacitors), indeed all the plateau are good: this can be investigated during the October shutdown.
