  1. Introduction to the Calculator Based Ranger (CBR)

  2. Equipment Needed • TI Graphing Calculator (73, 82, 83, 83+, 84, 84+, 92, 92+) • Calculator Based Ranger (CBR) • Calculator-to-Calculator Cable

  3. Other Helpful Equipment • Overhead Projector and TI ViewScreen (so all students can see the menus, graphs, and results, and interact more) • TI Connect (to copy graphs generated by using the CBR and insert them into other documents)

  4. Conic Distribution of Sound “Clicks” • The CBR is a motion detector that emits and collects a three-dimensional sound wave. Minimum Recommended Distance Maximum Recommended Distance

  5. Set-up Possibility #1 • Plug one end of the cable into the bottom of the TI Graphing Calculator. • Plug the other end of the cable into the Calculator Based Ranger(CBR). • This set-up is best for individual or team use.

  6. Set-up Possibility #2 • Use a TI Graphing Calculator that is equipped to work with a ViewScreen. • Connect the CBR to the calculator and the calculator to a ViewScreen. • This set-up is best for teacher demonstration.

  7. Set-up Possibility #3 • Collect data using the CBR and then connect to a graphing calculator to upload data. • This set-up is best when the cord and calculator could be in the way or awkward to hold.

  8. Start Using the CBR • Now that you know how to set up the equipment, you need to make another decision. Either… • point the CBR at a stationary object and the usermoves with the CBR, • or the user or another object (like a ball) moves in front of the CBR.

  9. Buttons you will use: • ON • ENTER • APPS • Arrows

  10. Steps Part 1: • Select “ON”. • Select “APPS” and you will see a screen similar to the one shown. • Choose “CBL/CBR” and press “ENTER”. Follow the screen direction (Press ANY Key) to move to the following screen. • Then, choose option “3:RANGER”.

  11. Steps Part 2: • The next screen should be like the one on the right. Then, press the “ENTER” key. • Next, you will see the “MAIN MENU” screen. Choose “1:SETUP/SAMPLE” and press “ENTER” to arrive at the following set of options.

  12. Steps Part 3: • Select the options as you see fit for the experiment. Arrow through the options and press “ENTER” to change the selection. • Arrow up to “START NOW” and press“ENTER”. • The next screen will be one of the following two. The second is an error – make sure your cables are properly connected.

  13. Steps Part 4: • Once the CBR and TI are “speaking” with one another and you select “ENTER”, you will hear a series of clicks. The lights on the CBR will also flash green. • Begin moving the CBR or the object depending upon the experiment. When the green lights turn off, the CBR is no longer recording data. • If you selected “REALTIME: YES”, it will draw the graph in real time. • If you selected “REALTIME: NO”, it will transmit and then draw the graph.

  14. If at first you don’t succeed… • If your attempt is not the same as the intended graph, • you can try again by pressing “ENTER” then choosing “3: REPEAT SAMPLE”. Attempt Intended try, try again.

  15. Horizontal Butte Constant Parabolic Peak Stair Step Wave Distance match (APPLICATIONS) • Under “APPLICATIONS” students can try to match various distance graphs, velocity graphs, and a ball bounce.

  16. Graph Analysis • By using “TRACE”, you can identify various features of a function. • When using “REALTIME: NO”, 4 data sets are transferred to the lists and can be further analyzed or applied. L1 = Time L2 = Distance L3 = Velocity L4 = Acceleration

  17. Be Creative! • Start simple and most of all have fun! • There are several ideas on my website to get you started, but remember to be creative! • Try changing the object that is moving or the parameters of its movement.

  18. After All… • Newton would have LOVED the CBR!
