  2. Purpose of the Experiment • Evaluate the health and well-being of American children

  3. Hypothesis • There is a negative relationship between family size and ability • There is a negative relationship between birth-order and ability

  4. Data • Obtained from Cycle II of the ‘National Health Examination Survey • Multi-stage, stratified probability sample • Household units/ over selected • 96% made it to final survey

  5. Subjects • Non-institutionalized children ages 6-11 in the United States

  6. Independent Variable • Family size (# of siblings) • Birth order • Race • Maternal/Paternal education • Family income • Maternal age

  7. Dependent Variable • IQ performance • IQ subtests • Vocabulary and Block design subtests of the full-scale Wechsler IQ examination for children • Adjusted for sex differences
