  11. Retelling #1-the owls point of view (continued on next slide) I swooshed down from the branch and he saw me! The mouse was scared, I knew that for sure. I had time to pick him up with my claws before he took out his penknife. I guess I wasn’t holding him that well because all of a sudden he got his penknife out and slashed my toes a lot of times! I finally dropped him and he ran into the log. I landed on top of it and thought he was not being like a regular mouse! I stayed there for a while but I left in the early morning. I stayed mostly on a hiding spot in the tree just watching that mouse, hoping he would do something else a mouse wouldn’t do (it was really, very funny to see!) It was winter and I saw a few snowflakes minding their own business up in the sky. Suddenly, I heard a noise and opened my sleepy eyes. It was the mouse again! He had a spear (that was very unlike a regular mouse), it was made by a long stick and his penknife tied on top. Then, he picked up a gray-brown feather, like my feathers and then he ran into his log. I heard a chant and it went something like this “Foul owl, ugly you, you’ll never get me, whatever you do. You cannot hurt me, you cannot kill, you’re in my power, I HAVE YOUR QUILL!!” It seemed like he was trying to cast a spell on me with that feather.

  12. Retelling #1-The Owls Point Of View (continued on Next Slide) The next night, I didn’t see him! I had no idea where he was! He probably was still in his log in the daytime too. But I was too busy sleeping. About 2 weeks from then, maybe 1, I thought maybe the mouse was sleeping, well I swooped down from the branch I always sit on and of course, he wasn’t asleep! He had his spear ready and I pretended to get hurt but then I swooped back down hoping to get him by surprise. But I didn’t surprise him! Instead, he slashed me but I tried not to make him think I got hurt. With one claw, I tried to keep the spear away from me and with the other I tried to rip the mouse’s coat off of him. Finally, I decided it was no use trying to defeat the weirdest unoriginal mouse I’ve ever wanted to eat! So, then I stared at him, trying to figure out what kind of mouse he was. Was he always this crazy? Was it the river water that made him crazy? Did he have family as crazy as him? Was he some kind of special extinct mouse and he was the only one that survived? He kept on slashing his spear at me trying to kill me but I was too high for him to even brush me with it. I kept on staring, just wandering what was wrong with him. I heard him say something like “COWARD!” and I saw the veins on his neck swell up.

  13. Retelling #1—Owls Point of View (last slide) Then he yelled at me “COME DOWN AND DO BATTLE! YOU BIRD, REPTILE, FIEND, OR WHATEVER KIND OF VILLIAN YOU ARE!” I wasn’t offended. I mean, how could I from that kind of insult?! I stared at him wondering if he would say something else funny or stupid. Finally, he left. I swooshed up onto the tree and tried to get asleep, because I’M AN OWL! I NEED MY SLEEP AT DAYTIME! I slept till nighttime and I started brainstorming at 1:00 a.m.. I had no idea what to do. So, I flew around, the tree and around the mouse's log wishing I could go back to sleep. But it was impossible, I was to awake to go to sleep! That always happens to me! Sometimes, I wish I wasn’t nocturnal so I could hunt in the daytime. This winter, I just kind of gave up. I mean, how could I get that weird mouse? I slept all day and hunted other animals all night. After the winter, in the middle of spring, I flew off the island.

  14. Retelling #2-Abel’s Journal Dear Journal, Please help! I am stuck on this place and have no idea how to get out! I came to the forest with my dear Amanda for a picnic but a storm came and now I’m stuck on this hideous place! What happened was I tried to catch Amanda’s scarf when it flew off her neck in the horrid storm! I succeeded but when I tried to get back up I rolled down the hill and hurt myself! I couldn’t get up from the pain in my stomach and arm so I just let it take me! I was stuck on a board holding onto a nail and then all of a sudden I plunged down a waterfall. After that I fell deeply into sleep and when I woke up I was stuck on a tree! As I was climbing down I kept on laughing about how I was climbing down a tree I haven’t even climbed up! I noticed that I didn’t feel the pain anymore and I was glad, but I’m still stuck on this place! I don’t even know what it is? Oh! My family must be so worried! They are probably searching everywhere, probably even in a different state!! Sorry, I have to go now, I need to send a smoke signal. Oh, how my family must be worried!! Abel, August 29th 1907

  15. Retelling #2--Abel’s Journal (2nd Entry) Dear Journal, Oh my! I just explored the rest of this horrid place and it seems very scary! From all the books I’ve read it seems that this is an island. It has a river all around it and trees and I measured it out and found out that this island of some sort is 5,000 tails long for the width and 12,000 tails long for the length. I need to explore just a little more and when I do I will tell you anything interesting! Fair well for now! Abel, August 31st, 1907

  16. Retelling #3—Abels Journal (#3rd Entry) I’ve just explored a little more. It seems that this island is empty. The only thing I found was grass, trees, and a hollow log. I have no use for that stupid log though! Or maybe I do…. It could be my house! Yes, yes that would be very good! That will do! I will move my only thing into the hollow log and sleep in it tonight! What journal? You wonder what my only thing is? Well, you of course! Also, Amanda’s scarf though! But, I put it in my pocket or around my neck! Well, there I go! I don’t have to sleep on the bumpy ground anymore! Well, I better go move you! Farewell, farewell! Abel, August 31st, 1907

  17. Retelling #3—What Amanda Did NOT Do When Abel was Gone “Oh my! Abelard!! Abelard! Come back!!!” I yelled fearful. I saw my poor Abel fly through the winds. “ABELARD!!!” I yelled after him. I wanted to go after him and my scarf but I stayed in the cave full of fear. Abel was out of sight when I looked out of the cave again. I cried and cried…for JOY!! “OH MY! ABEL IS GONE! NO MORE ACTING THAT I LOVE HIM! I CAN BE ME!! FREE ME!!!!!!!!!” I danced around and laughed about. Then I sat down and got colorful paper out (we made our own confetti for that awful picnic) and I ripped up the paper and made more confetti—just for me though!) I was so happy!! I threw the confetti in the air and jumped around. So excited to be free! Finally, I can marry a good and rich man and someone that actually works. I walked home after the storm then registered for Mice-Harmony. Later that month I met a very, very handsome man. He was elegant, athletic, and intelligent. All I wanted! Oh, and he worked!! It got pretty serious, our relationship, and he proposed. I said yes and then he had to go to work. I went to the park for a little and thought I spotted someone that looked just like Abel but in really ugly raggedy clothes! I sat on the park bench for a while just thinking and then went home. My scarf was there and I assumed it was my fiancé, Fenler (Oh how I just ADORE that name!), and I ran into the living room. But, instead it was this guy that looked just like Abel. But he looked a little older! I realized it was Abel and ran to him and hugged him. Then I ran out the door!
