  3. Safe Use of Hazardous Substances • Your manger will tell you how to use a chemical safely and how to follow instructions written on the label. • Make sure your equipment works well. If you notice any leaks or blockages, tell your supervisor. • Always correctly wear the correct safety equipment provided by your employer. • Never use any chemical for which you have not had appropriate training 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  4. Safe Use of Hazardous Substances • Do not eat, drink or smoke while working with a hazardous substance and do not keep food near the substance. • Wash your hands, face and other exposed areas with soap and water before going to the toilet or eating and drinking. • More detailed information about every hazardous substance should be available on written sheets provided by the manufacturer or supplier. These are called "Material Safety Data Sheets" or MSDSs, and must accompany every hazardous substance sent to a workplace. 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  6. Safe Use of Hazardous Substances • Read the label. • Important information is written on labels of hazardous substance containers. • After you have been trained, take time to read labels as they provide a guide to safe handling, storage and use, as well as first aid treatment advice. • Do not use a container if it is not clearly labelled and you are not sure of its contents. Ask for instructions from your supervisor 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  7. HOW HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES CAN HARM YOU • Hazardous substances are dangerous. How dangerous, depends on the type of substance, what it is made of, the speed and the way it enters the body and the amount of substance that enters the body. • The effect a hazardous substance has on the body also depends on the person's age, sex, body weight and state of health. • Harm to health may occur suddenly, such as dizziness, nausea and itchy eyes or skin; or it may occur gradually over many years. • In some cases, chemicals can cause permanent disability because the body has become very sensitive. For example, using a certain chemical could cause an asthma attack in a person who may never have suffered from asthma before. 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  8. HOW HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES CAN HARM YOU • Hazardous substances enter the body through: • Skin contact and absorption. • Breathing in fumes, vapours and dust. • Contact with chemicals while eating and drinking. • Accidental ingestion as when blowing to clear spray nozzles. 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  9. COSHH – Hazardous Substances • Law • The supply, storage, use and disposal of hazardous substances are required to be controlled under the current COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations. • Such substances are be identified by black-on-orange warning signs on labels, using the words “very toxic”, “toxic”, “irritant”, “harmful”, or “corrosive”. • Each supplier of such substances must provide a “Material Safety Data Sheet” which gives information on its safe use, with necessary precautions. This is a requirement under the current Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging) Regulations – the CHIP Regulations. 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  10. Chemical Safety • Emergencies • Whenever you work with hazardous substances, there is the potential for something to go wrong. • You need to think about possible problems and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency. 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  11. Chemical Safety • Instructing staff in emergency procedures is an important part of their job training, and should be ongoing. Examples of things to think about are: • Make sure workers know enough to prevent the mixing of incompatible chemicals. • Lay down the procedures to be followed if there is a leak or spill of hazardous material and make sure people know and understand them. • If special first-aid facilities or equipment are required, then staff need to be trained in their use. 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  12. Chemical Safety • When handling chemicals ALWAYS: • Check the label of its contents. • Follow usage and safety instructions • Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • Store safely and replace when task completed • Dispose of safely 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  13. Chemical Safety • When handling chemicals NEVER: • Mix chemicals • Use a container if it is not clearly labeled • Leave chemicals unattended • Use if unsure of correct use or safety procedures • Safety Principles • By applying these principles you will be well on the way to making sure that you are working safely with hazardous substances. 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual

  16. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Employer provides; employee must wear Employee will be disciplined/dismissed for failure to wear. Employee must report missing/broken/out of date PPE. Hazards where PPE may be provided: - • Blows, cuts, impact, crushing • Stabs, Cuts and grazes • Scalds, heat and fire • Electrical • Noise • Dust fiber • Fumes • Gases, vapours • Splashes • Bacteria and Viruses • Slips and falls from a height 3D LEISURE - Health & Safety Refresher Training Manual
