volume • Amount of space an object takes up • Solids: length x width x height • Liquids: Use a graduated cylinder
To find the volume of a solid that has an irregular shape, use liquid displacement:
Density • Which weighs more, a pound of lead, or a pound of feathers? • Which weighs more, a box of lead, or the same sized box of feathers? • Lead has a higher density than feathers, which means it weighs more for its size. Density is the amount of mass in a given unit of volume. • If two objects are the same volume, the heavier one has the higher density.
buoyancy • Buoyancy is the ability to float. • An object will float if its density is less than that of the liquid. If it is more dense than the liquid, it will sink.
mixtures • Different materials are placed together, but they keep their own properties. • Can be separated again
solutions • A type of mixture in which one substance dissolves into something else. The substances are spread evenly and will not settle. • Solute: the substance that dissolves into something else (sugar) • Solvent: the substance that does the dissolving (water)
