Beyond College Credit – 5 Big Ideas • Our economic prosperity relies on increasing the number of workers who have a college degree, and there is a particular need for workers who have STEM skills • Future growth in population and workers in Massachusetts depends on students of color • Research consistently finds that taking rigorous courses prepares students for success in both college and the labor force • The Advanced Placement program is an effective strategy for increasing students’ access to advanced coursework • To expand access and maintain quality: support high schools, better align AP outcomes with college credit policies, and identify unmet need STRENGTH ON STRENGTH

Boston Opportunity Agenda: College Success Indicators High school diploma no longer sufficient! • Maintaining an attendance rate of 94% or higher • Achieving a cumulative GPA of 2.7+ • Completing an internship, job shadowing, or community service • Completing MassCore while enrolling in at least one AP, IB, or CTE course STRENGTH ON STRENGTH

Steps to Academic Rigor • Offer courses that prepare students for college-level work. • Advise students to take rigorous courses and educate them and their families on why they’re important. • Remove barriers to student participation. • Provide additional supports for students, e.g., additional learning time. • Provide first class training and support for their teachers so they can teach diverse students to the required level of rigor. Implementing rigorous academic programs in all high schools can both improve educational outcomes and increase earnings. STRENGTH ON STRENGTH
