  3. Who can do Green IT? • Anyone in control of a computer/s and related hardware • System Administrators • Equipment manufacturers • Computer assemblers • IT sales personnel • IT project contract authors • Project Managers

  4. Measure consumption to find out how much you save with efficiency changes Single Power point meter ~ $40 Building power meter $100, 3 phase $150

  5. Can I apply Green IT now? • YES • Turn on Screen and Hard disk power management • Turn on Sleep and / or Hibernation management • Shutdown computers at then end of each day • This saves approximately 60% on power

  6. Compare same Laptop with Power Management Celeron 1.8 GHz laptop with Vista Basic. 44% power saving using settings only.

Green Choices • Turn on Power Management • Set screensavers to None • Buy Energy Star rated computers • Use laptops instead of desktops as they typically use less power • Turn off peripherals when not in use • Turn off power at power point to stop phantom / standby loads • Close unused applications • Turn off monitor when not in use • Measure your power consumption

Computer Sleep States S3 & S4 • When S3 or S4 level sleep state is enabled in BIOS the computer power consumption goes down to a few Watts • S1 – Flush caches and stop processor • S2 – S1 + power down processor • S3 – Keep memory powered and power off everything else possible. Quick to resume time • S4 – Hibernate, memory to hard disk. Power failure safe. Slower resume time

  22. BIOS Checklist • Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) : Enabled • Smart Fan : Enabled • Suspend Mode : S3 • Speed Step / Cool n quiet : Enabled • Motherboard defaults are getting better (needed for Energy Stars)

Managed Power Management Software • Can shut down computer as required by group policy • Work can be saved before automated shutdown • Reports on status of all computers and how much power is being saved • Can wake up computer for updates or start of work day • Save ~ $6700 per year for 100 desktops

Cooling Calculations • There is a direct relationship between energy consumption and cooling requirements needed (3 BTU capacity needed for every 1 Watt electrical load) • Choosing efficient servers / desktop PC / notebooks / thin clients reduces the building cooling needs • This saves money in initial capital costs and running costs

Other Processors • Intel Atom processor uses up to 4 Watts and now is used on small laptops • Via Eden processors use from 2.5 to 7 watts and require no fans which is good for embedded or battery power • ARM processors are used in PDA’s, mobile phones, media players and sections of consumer electronics

Where is IT saving environment now? • Electronic banking, electronic receipts, electronic pay slips, Intranets, Wikis, electronic form handling, email instead of post, email instead of fax, duplex printing, saving us from repetitive tasks, decision support systems, electronic commerce, instant messaging, electronic magazines & newspapers, online services such as email, document handling and computer maintenance.
