  1. ESS Topic 3 Lesson 5 Discuss the view that the environment can have its own intrinsic value. Assessment Statements 3.2.4

  2. Can we put a value on nature? How much is it worth? $$

  3. From the Spec… • Organisms or ecosystems that are valued on aesthetic or intrinsic grounds may not provide commodities identifiable as either goods or services, and so remain unpriced or undervalued from an economic viewpoint. • Organisms or ecosystems regarded as having intrinsic value, for instance from an ethical, spiritual or philosophical perspective, are valued regardless of their potential use to humans. • Therefore, diverse perspectives may underlie the evaluation of natural capital.

  4. What goods / services are harnessed from these ecosystems? What is the value of these?

  5. Recap… How does natural capital acquire value through its production of goods / services? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYaaZjY20yA 20 minutes

  6. Alternative values of nature… Use these sites to help explain why nature can have a value to humans beyond social / economic implications: http://www.divinecaroline.com/life-etc/culture-causes/holy-cow-animals-and-their-spiritual-significance http://wonderofcreation.org/2011/05/12/natures-spiritual-values/ http://www.iucn.org/about/work/programmes/social_policy/sp_themes_sns2/ https://twitter.com/Earth_Pics
