  • Screed Elevations (to set finished surface)

    • Curblines (barrier) or Deck edges

    • Profile grade lines (not over beams)

    • Transverse grade-break lines

    • Phased construction lines

  • Top of Haunch Elevations

    • Centerline of each girder (to set forms)

  • Final Deck Surface Elevations

  • SCREED ELEVATIONS represent the theoretical deck surface location prior to deflections caused by deck placement and other anticipated dead loads.

  • TOP OF HAUNCH ELEVATIONS represent the theoretical location of the bottom of the deck above the beam/girder haunch prior to deflections caused by deck placement and other anticipated dead loads.

  • Haunch Fills = Top of Haunch Elev. – Surveyed Beam Elev.

  • FINAL DECK SURFACE ELEVATIONS shown represent the deck surface location after all anticipated dead load deflections have occurred.

    DIFFERENTIAL DEFLECTION

    The primary reason for eliminating screed elevations from above each beam/girder line was differential deflection between beam/girders

Causes of Differential Deflection

Variations in one of the following three variables will affect the amount of beam/girder deflection that occurs due to the wet weight of concrete at each screed cross-section:

  • Span length of each beam/girders.

  • Magnitude of concrete load applied to each beam/girder.

  • Size of each beam/girder cross-section.

Sealing of Concrete Surfaces

  • Measure sealing of concrete surfaces by the number of square yards of coated area projected to a 2-dimensional surface

  • Documentation – New CA-S-21 Form

  • New Work Type 57 for Sealing of Concrete Surfaces

  • Contractors should have had training

  • Came up with new pay item for Removal of Existing Coating (S.Y.)

  • Remove existing coatings completely

  • Ensure that all wastes generated by surface preparation operation are managed to prevent discharge

Duties of the QCS:

  • Inspect equipment and abrasive at specified intervals

  • Approve the work and provide documentation that the work has been approved immediately before the QCP

    3. Inspect the work with the Engineer or his representative at all QCP.

    4. Verify the Contractor or fabricator performed work according to the work requirements.

    5. Cooperate with the inspection and testing performed by the Engineer and inspector.

    6. Document test results and compare test results with the inspector’s test results.

    7. Notify the foreman of nonconforming work.

    8. Stop work when test equipment is not available and when necessary to ensure the work is performed according to the Contract.

  • Quality Control Points (QCP):

  • QCPs are points in time when one phase of the work is complete and approved by the quality control specialist and ready for inspection by the Engineer before continuing with the next phase of work.

  • At a QCP, the quality control specialist or fabricator shall provide quality control tests bearing their signature to the Engineer.(CA-S-7 QCS Inspection Documentation Form)

  • The Contractor or fabricator shall provide the Engineer and inspectors access to inspect all affected surfaces.

  • If inspection identifies a deficiency, correct the deficiency according to the Contract Documents before starting the next phase of work.

At each Quality Control Point, the QCS must inspect, then sign this form stating that the work is in complete compliance and ready for inspection by the owner’s inspector.

  • Owner’s Inspector’s Duties

  • Under Documentation Requirements- 514 Field Painting of Structural Steel from 2009 Construction Inspection Manual of Procedures, the inspector is required to:

  • Document Dry Film Thickness readings on Form CA-S-2

  • Ensure that the QCS fills out and signs the CA-S-7 Form prior to all Quality Control Point Inspections

  • Document the QCS’s information and Job Site Visual Standards on Form CA-S-11

  • Document Solvent Cleaning(QCP#1) and Grinding of Flange Edges (QCP#2) on Form CA-S-12

  • Document Abrasive Blasting (QCP#3) on Form CA-S-13

  • Owner’s Inspector’s Duties

    6. Document Waste Disposal (QCP#4) on Form CA-S-14

  • Document Prime Coat Application (QCP#5) on Forms CA-S-15 and CA-S-2

  • Document Grinding Fins, Tears, and Slivers (QCP#6) and Caulking (QCP#9) on From CA-S-16

  • Document Intermediate Coat Application (QCP#8) and Finish Coat Application (QCP#10) on Forms CA-S-17 and CA-S-2

  • Document the Final Destructive Tests on Form CA-S-18

  • Document the Final Review (QCP#11) on Form CA-S-19

    The owner’s inspector needs to make independent checks of the QCS’s readings and results.
