  1. PSYCH JOURNAL 9/30/2013 • Please answer one of the following questions. • How do you experience pain? Do injuries cause you intense pain or mild pain? • Do you think your mind has a role in controlling pain? Have you ever been able to control your pain by thinking a certain way? Explain..

  2. Other senses Smell, Touch, Pain

  3. Smell • Olfaction – our sense of smell • Smell can enter through nose or mouth • Signals from receptors are sent to olfactory nerve, which sends the signal to the olfactory bulb in the brain (beneath the frontal lobe)

  4. Why is smell important? • Smell danger • Smells can trigger memories

  5. How do we remember smells? • Thousand of receptors exist, each responding to a part of an odor molecule's structure • Lock & Key • Two neural pathways send signals about odor to the brain • One passes through the thalamus (memory) • One is connected to the limbic system (emotion)

  6. Senses of the Skin • Basic skin senses: Touch (pressure), warmth, cold, pain

  7. Pain • Pain serves as a warning system • Pain differs from other senses – when the stimulus producing the pain is removed, the pain continues.

  8. Gate-Control Theory of Pain • Pain signals must pass through a “gate” in the spinal cord (hypothetical) • When the brain interprets pain information, it can send signals to “open” or “close” the gate • Influenced by psychological aspects.

  9. Neuromatrix Theory of Pain • The brain is capable of generating pain on its own • Network of neurons in the brain gives us a sense of our own body • When the network produces an abnormal pattern, pain results • Memories, emotion, and expectations influence pain • Phantom Pain – Abnormal patterns due to lack of sensory stimulation – amputated limbs.

  10. Phantom Pain and Mirror Therapy • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL_6OMPywnQ

  11. Extrasensory Perception Real or Bogus??

  12. Extrasensory perception – sending and receiving messages beyond our 5 senses • Telepathy – Direct communication of messages from one mind to another • Precognition – Perceiving events that have not happened

  13. Parapsychology • The study of psychic phenomena such as ESP and telepathy • NO SCIENTIFIC JUSTIFICATION: • Failure to replicate experiments • Lack of brain mechanism to send or receive signals • Signals cannot be measured • Magic, trickery
