  1. Singular and Plural Nouns Singular Noun: A noun that names one person, place or thing. Plural Noun: A noun that names more than one person, place or thing.

Singular and Plural Nouns Rules for adding -S Rules for adding -es • Add –s to most singular nouns • One boy> two boys • One puddle> both puddles • A rose> ten roses • Add –es to singular nouns that end with “s”, “x”, “o”, “ch”, or “sh” • One bus> three buses • This box>some boxes • One bunch> six bunches • A wish> many bunches • A volcano> two volcanoes

  3. Nouns Ending with y Rule 1: If the noun ends with a vowel and y, add -s

  4. Nouns ending with y (cont) Singular Plural • One toy • A monkey • a boy • Many toys • Five monkeys • Three boys

  5. Nouns Ending with y Rule 2: If the noun ends with a consonant and y, change the y to I and add -es

  6. Nouns ending with y(cont) Singular Plural • One family • This city • A baby • Some families • Six cities • Two babies

  7. Irregular Plural Nouns Rule: There are some plural nouns that just have to be remembered

  9. Nouns ending with f or fe Rule: Some nouns ending in f or fe are made plural by changing f or fe to “ves”. There are some exceptions in which you only add s(ex: chief, safe, grief, kerchief, hoof, roof)
