  1. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • In Matthew 23:29-39, Jesus is speaking to • The teachers of the law and the Pharisees • He accuses them of decorating the graves of the prophets but they are about

  2. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • To kill Him, the greatest prophet and others He will send out. • So He predicts that their house will be left desolate—their temple and city destroyed.

  3. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • He predicts that this will come “upon you”— • This generation • Those to whom He is speaking. • The temple will be totally destroyed.

  4. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • This destruction actually happened when • Titus, the Roman general, destroyed the temple and the city in 70 AD • The Arch of Titus, in the Roman Forum, records this

  5. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • Jesus disciples ask two questions: • Check also Luke 21:20. • When will this be? • By what signs can we tell it is coming?

  6. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • He has already said it would happen “to you.” • In verse 34 He emphasizes that point by saying that “This generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.”

  7. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • So the “when” question is answered—within the lifetimes of those to whom He is speaking. • Now to the “sign” question • He begins by saying, “Watch out that no one deceives you.”

  8. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • Then He gives a list of possibly misleading events. His message is, do not let these events, which will be happening, deceive you. • The real sign is in verse 15.

  9. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • The “abomination of desolation” spoken of by Daniel the prophet. • Luke 21:20—an army coming to surround the city

  10. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • This is the real sign by which you will know it is time to make your move. • When you see this sign— • Flee to the hills • As quickly as you can

  11. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • They should pray that this flight will not come when things would make it more difficult small children winter the Sabbath Day

  12. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • Is this good advice for the end of the world? • In verse 36, Jesus says that He now comes to describe an event the time for which He does not know. Obviously a different event.

  13. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • For this event there will be no warning— • As it was in the days of Noah • It will come upon them • Like a thief

  14. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • So the passage often used to suggest signs by which we can tell when the end of the world is near, does not teach that.

  15. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • Matthew 24:4-14 lists events that will happen between 30 and 70 AD but which are events that might mislead. • These are not even signs of the fall of Jerusalem.

  16. SIGNS—MATTHEW 24 • The most important message here is for us to • Watch—for we do not know when the Lord will come.
